Some Methods of Separating Mixtures

1. Filtration – method to separate mixture of insoluble solids from liquids using a net or a filter paper.
2. Centrifugation – some components weigh heavier than others. Heavier components can be separated through
centrifugation.
3. Evaporation – heating the mixture so that liquid evaporates to form steam leaving the solid behind.
4. Distillation – same as evaporation, only that the vapors will be collected.
5. Sedimentation and Decantation – heavier particles settle down at the bottom of the liquid and liquid can be
poured off.
6. Hand picking – components are relatively larger. Thus, can be done by manually picking up each component.
I. Objective:
To separate each component of the given mixtures.
Identify the method used to separate mixtures.
