Experiment Name:

Calibrate a bourdon tube pressure gauge with a dead weight gauge.

Objective:
• Gain knowledge about dead weight pressure gauge.
• Know about energy measurement.
• Gaining knowledge about Burdon's tube gauge.

Equipments:

• Dead Weight Calibrator.

• Set of Test weights.
• Weight balance.
• Bourdon pressure gauge.

Theory:
Bourdon Tube Pressure Gauge: A Bourdon
tube pressure gauge is a mechanical device used
to measure and display pressure. The gauge can
be used for measuring pressure in both gas and
liquid state systems. The bourdon gauge may
appear like one of the least interesting pieces of
equipment out there, but it is still one of the most
widely spread. Indeed it's difficult to imagine
most engineering processes without these
gauges. The Bourdon gauge dates back
to 1849 and was invented in France by Mr.
Eugene Bourdon. The gauge quickly gained popularity because it enabled
operators to see the pressure within a system; it was also cheap and reliable.
Since 1849 the gauge design has been refined, but it still functions the same
now as it did all those years ago. The Bourdon gauge has been in existence for
over 100 years in one form or another and remains today one of the most
common pressure gauges available. Applications are numerous and include a
variety of gaseous and liquid state systems. Repairing the gauge is rarely
possible unless using specialist equipment, but Bourdon gauges are cheap and
thus can be easily held as spares.
Dead Weight Pressure Gauge: A dead weight pressure gauge is a standard
calibration instrument used in almost every industry for calibration purposes.
Dead weight tester is mainly placed in laboratories or calibration centers of
every industry. The dead weight tester works simply by comparing the pressure
exerted by a known weight. In a dead weight tester, a primary piston is present
which carries a known weight, an oil reservoir chamber containing oil (oil is
used because it is incompressible), an isolation valve for the oil reservoir,
known weights with different magnitude, and secondary piston to pressurize the
oil filled in the chamber. This secondary piston is also called a pumping piston.

A pressure gauge a pressure transmitter or a pressure switch that is to be

calibrated is installed on the place where we have shown a pressure device
under test. The pumping piston is used to pressurize the oil in the oil-filled
reservoir. The weight starts floating after the application of a defined pressure
which is proportional to the amount of the weight. There is a limit defined
which can be seen visually between which the weight should start floating. Till
the weight is not limiting, we have to keep on pumping or reduce the oil
pressure. The weight on this piston has a particular defined pressure. An oil
reservoir is also provided for filling the oil and an isolation valve for isolating
the oil reservoir is also provided.
Working Procedure:

1. Measure the weight of the calibration masses.

2. Note down the weight of the piston and its cross-sectional area.
3. Remove the piston and pour the water into the cylinder until it is
Full to overflow level. Any air trapped in the tube may be cleared
By tilting and gently tapping the apparatus.
4. Insert the piston carefully and spin it to minimize any friction
Effects.
5. Note the pressure reading from the gauge.
6. Add the weights in convenient increments, and at each increment,
7. Observe the pressure gauge reading.
8. Take similar sets of readings with decreasing weights.

Data Sheet:
Dead weight tester pressure Bourdon tube pressure gage
(psi) (psi)
5 4.08
15 14.5
35 34.8
55 54.0
95 93.0
135 134.0
175 173.0

Conclusion:
The types of pressure gauge usage depend upon the application and range of
fluid force that needs to be measured. As the Bourdon Tube gauge can measure
high-range fluid force its application is high. The construction of the Bourdon
Tube pressure gauge is simple. Its sensitivity requires caring while storing and
measuring. Bourdon Tube Gauge is not at all costlier and at the same time it is
not so cheaper.
