There are five different ways that an author can indirectly reveal the personality of the characters (Speech, Thoughts, Effects
on Others, Actions, Looks).
Use the STEAL method to analyze a character from your reading. Be sure to include the evidence, what it reveals and the page #.
SPEECH: Consider what the character
says, how they speak, and what this
reveals about them.
He is cooperative as he listened
to grandmother almost
instantly.
ACTIONS: Consider what the character
does and what this says about their
personality.
He is hard working and
determined as he did not give up
when he couldn’t catch and kill
the Python
THOUGHTS: Consider what is revealed
through the character’s private thoughts
and feelings.
He is optimistic and thinks
about the best in people. He
always looks at the bright side
of things as he believed that the
Python could be kind.
LOOKS: Consider the character’s body
language, expression, and dress. What
does this reveal?
He is strong as he was
confident he could kill the
Python with an umbrella
EFFECT ON OTHERS: Consider what is
revealed through the character’s
relationship with others.
He loves his family and would do
anything for them including
getting rid of the Python, this
shows that he is also selfless and
puts others before his own needs.
OVERALL: After you have examined all 5
elements, how would you describe the
character’s personality?
He is determined and strong.
He loves his family and he is
compassionate. He is also
optimistic and hard working.
Lastly he is cooperative.
