BSED was asked for the Mayor’s Mackinac Policy Conference speech to estimate the number of properties in tthe city where land is currently being used for the long-term storage of scrap, auto parts, or used cars. Our analysis is as follows: ‘Total number of properties in BSED system with uses listed as scrapyards, auto parts yards, lots for buying and selling of used cars, or auto repair uses: 1,414. They break down as the following: Scrapyards/Junkyard/Used Auto Part Yards/Auto Dismantling 122 Used car lots 372 Repair Shops 920 Total lots in BSEED SmartSheet aaa These are the numbers in the BSEED SmartSheet that list these purposes as their use, Many are not currently in use or are not actually still being used for the purpose listed. We were asked to estimate the ‘number that are actually being used today for the long-term storage of scrap, auto parts, or used cars. Our best estimate is as follows: Scrapyard/lunkyards/Used Auto Part Yards/ Auto Dismantling (122) ‘These tend to be long-term, stable uses that rarely change: 122 Used car lots (372) ‘Many used car lots are transitory, often consisting of nothing ‘more than a vacant lot or vacant lot with a fence. At any given time, we estimate that approximately 50% are unused. 50% of 372 = 186, 186 Repair Shops (920) ‘There are 920 repair shops listed. Many are strictly maintenance and repair (same-day oil change, tire repair, auto repair). They do not store parts or vehicles long-term on the property. Many other repair shops conduct other businesses on the site (used car sales, parts sales, towing, etc.). Those repair shops do store parts or vehicles on the land long-term.
