1. Problem Definition (What is the Problem): violence committed by employees or laid

off/fired employees against other employees, peers, supervisors, or managers.

2. Justification of the Problem (What caused the problem): in my opinion, it has 3

directions and accordingly different causes.

Upwards from employees/workers towards their managers/supervisors:

People might be furious due to accumulated feeling of injustice, excessive workload, or other
conditions that can lead to committing violence or homicide against their managers or other
employees.
Downwards from managers towards subordinates:
Psychological violence i.e.: Mistreatment, disrespect, offense
or
Physical abuse of higher-level employees towards their subordinates
Peers’ level:
Some employees might commit psychological or physical violence against their peers out of
jealousy and envy.

3. Alternatives:

1. Establishing a fair, harassment-free work environment.

2. Psychological assessment during resource selection and throughout the employment
period.
3. Security system, a protection plan against violence hazard.

4. Alternatives Evaluation:

1. Establishing a fair, harassment-free work environment.

 Establish a supportive, harmonized work environment.
 Develop anti-harassment and grievance policies.
 Encourage empathy management and penalize apathy, rude, or cruel management
behavior.
 Provide fair appeasement for laid off employees.
2. Psychological assessment during resource selection and throughout the employment
period.

 Careful resource selection should take place during the recruitment process to exclude
the candidates with violence tendencies.
 Perform regular psychological assessment for employees to uncover their pains,
suspicious intentions, and their level of work satisfaction.
 Anonymous work satisfaction surveys indicate if the reality is aligned with management
perception.
 Blood test helps identify employees who are drug-addicted which is a typical reason for
violence.
 Psychological assessments indicate employees with the highest risk and need for
immediate action to avoid potential violence.

3. Security system, a protection plan against violence hazard.

 Installation of metal detection device or other inspection machines at company’s

facilities.
 24/7 guarding for important facilities to prevent destruction.
 Workplace violence insurance policies to cover the expenses incurred resulting from
violence incidents.
 Providing workers compensation insurance policies to cover injuries, or death due to
workplace violence.

5. Recommendations:

I go with the first 2 alternatives (establishing a harassment-free work environment and

performing regular psychological assessments and anonymous satisfaction surveys to
employees).

Although all alternatives are preventive actions, I believe that providing a fair work
environment, tracking employees’ satisfaction, and resolving their complaints would
achieve better results in minimizing workplace violence than planning what to do to
contain the problem as it happens.
