The name Lanao comes from the word ranao which means "lake." Lake Lanao is
located here, which is the largest lake in Mindanao and the second largest in the
Philippines (after Lake Laguna). Four rivers feed the lake while the Agus River is
the only river that flows from it. The lake is an important part of people's lives in
this area, which is why the Meranaos, who are the people who live here, are also
called "lake people." When it's market day, it can be seen that people's lives are
centered on the lake of Lanao which is very busy with the number of boats that
move here to bring goods. It is also one of the main means of transportation in
the towns of Lanao del Sur.

The language spoken by the people in this province is also called Meranao. The
majority of the people in Lanao are Muslims. Meranaos are known for being
creative. The carvings they call okir can be seen on their ceremonial equipment
and other equipment, the most famous of which is the sarimanok and colorful
nagas or snake-shaped carvings that are often found on the handles or ends of
their kampilans.

The people of Meranao are lucky to have a good climate, it is not too hot and they
are also deviated from the path of the typhoon so they are not affected much by
the typhoons that pass through our country
