Request for Permit to Conduct Data Gathering on Seabirds

PROF. ARIEL T. ORTIZ, MSc

Dean
College of Fisheries

Dear Sir,

Greetings of gratitude!

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. We, the undersigned students of the
4th year Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology program at Mindanao State University - General
Santos, will conduct a research study in the adjacent waters of Sarangani Bay Protected
Seascape, as part of our major subject, Undergraduate Thesis (MRB199).

Our study aims to contribute to the understanding of the marine ecosystem within the Sarangani
Bay Protected Seascape. Specifically, we are planning to investigate the spatial distribution,
diversity, and diurnal behavior of seabirds during the monsoon seasons in this ecologically
important region. The study area will only cover adjacent waters of Sarangani Bay Protected
Seascape specifically the municipal coastal waters of Glan, Maasim and Kiamba in the
Sarangani Province.

In line with this, we would like to ask your good office for permission to conduct the
aforementioned study in the municipal waters of Glan, Maasim and Kiamba which will take
place This August 26, 2023 to August 29, 2023 with the following research titles and the
respective researchers are as follows:

1. "Spatial Distribution and Diversity of Seabirds during Southwest Monsoon in the

Adjacent Waters of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape, Southern Mindanao,
Philippines" by Castoreno T. Asunto
2. "The Diurnal Behavior of Seabirds during Southwest Monsoon in the Adjacent
Waters of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape, Southern Mindanao, Philippines" by
Keinth Jann Ballon
3. "Spatial Distribution and Diversity of Seabirds during Northeast Monsoon in the
Adjacent Waters of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape, Southern Mindanao,
Philippines" by Clarence Jade B. Muegue

Department of Marine Biology

4. "The
Diurnal Behavior of Seabirds during Northeast Monsoon in the Adjacent Waters of
Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape, Southern Mindanao, Philippines" by Joseph
Jake T. Tajala

Objectives:
 Identify and document different seabird species present in the study area generated by
Distance software.
 Determine the distribution and abundance of various seabird species.
 Determine the behaviors of various seabird species.

Below is the equipment that the researcher will bring on the assessment:
 GPS
 Data Sheets
 Slates (2 pcs.)
 Field Guides
 Binoculars (2 pcs.)
 DSLR Camera (2 pcs.)
 Pencils/Ballpens
 Radio (walkie talkie)
 Life Jackets
