SUMMARY

In the digital age, reading comprehension faces significant challenges due to the
prevalence of influencers and discriminatory content online. Influencers, as new
influential voices, can convey superficial and biased messages, making it difficult to
discern between valid information and promotional content. On the other hand,
discriminatory content spreads prejudices and divisions in society through social
networks and online forums.

The proliferation of social networks and online platforms has given rise to an

3 PROBLEM STATEMENT

6
3.1 DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM

How lazy the internet is, there is no quality anymore, there is only meaningless
content that destroys the minds of our children.

3.2 JUSTIFICATION

We must change the internet, clean it up and create new rules, and regulate what
children see, starting with not giving access to it at a very early age to a child, they
don't need it, and can access anything they can imagine.

4. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

I. Influencers are people who have acquired a large number of followers

and have a strong influence on social media and online platforms.

These personalities usually stand out in areas such as fashion, beauty, fitness,
travel, technology, among others, and have built a committed community that
follows their publications and trusts their recommendations.

Characteristics of influencers:

Presence on social networks: Influencers have a prominent presence on platforms

such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Twitter or Facebook, where they regularly
share content to stay connected with their audience.

Authentic and personalized content: Influencers often share authentic and

personalized content that reflects their lifestyle, interests and passions. This helps
them connect more closely with their followers and create a relationship of trust.

Organic growth: The success of influencers is based on organic growth of their

audience, which is generated through their ability to generate engaging and
relevant content that resonates with their community.

Collaborations and sponsorships: Many influencers collaborate with brands and

companies to promote products or services to their audience. These collaborations
can be an important source of income for influencers.

Niche Diversity: Influencers can belong to a wide variety of niches, from

entertainment and fashion to technology and activism. Each niche has its own
community of loyal followers.

Influence on purchasing decisions: Influencers can have a significant impact on the

purchasing decisions of their followers. Your product recommendations and
reviews can influence the perception of the quality and usefulness of a product or
service.

Responsibility and Ethics: As influencers' influence grows, so does their

responsibility for the content they share. Many influencers are becoming aware of

8
their role as role models and are concerned about promoting positive and
responsible messages.

Importantly, while influencers can be a valuable source of information and

entertainment, it is also essential to exercise critical thinking when consuming their
content. Some influencers may be motivated primarily by commercial interests and
may promote products or ideas without adequate critical evaluation. Therefore, it is
crucial to verify the veracity of the information they share and consider various
sources before forming opinions or making decisions based on their
recommendations.

9
II. Discriminatory Content: Propagating Prejudices and Divisions

Another significant challenge in the digital age is the presence of discriminatory

content. Social networks and online forums can be breeding grounds for the
spread of hate speech, stereotypes and prejudices towards various communities
and groups. The ease of sharing and viralizing this content increases the possibility
of perpetuating harmful attitudes and divisions in society.

To face this problem, it is essential to develop critical reading comprehension skills.

Readers must learn to recognize and resist misinformation and content that
promotes discrimination, as well as be aware of their responsibility in preventing
the spread of these negative messages.

Discriminatory content on social networks are those messages, publications or

material that promote discrimination, hatred or violence towards individuals or
groups based on personal characteristics such as race, gender, religion, sexual
orientation, nationality, disability, among others. This content can manifest itself in
various forms, from offensive comments and stereotypes to images and videos that
incite hatred or ridicule certain groups.

Below are some examples of discriminatory content that can be found on social
networks:

Hate speech: Posts that contain offensive and aggressive language towards a
specific group, inciting hatred and violence.

Discriminatory memes and mockery: Images, caricatures or videos that ridicule

people or communities based on stereotypes and prejudices.

Racist or xenophobic comments: Messages that belittle or despise individuals of

different races or cultures.

Misogynistic and sexist content: Publications that denigrate or belittle women and
promote gender stereotypes.

10
Homophobia and transphobia: Content that discriminates against and attacks gay,
lesbian, bisexual or transgender people.

Content that promotes harassment and cyberbullying: Posts intended to harass,

humiliate or embarrass other people online.

The problem with discriminatory content on social media is that it can have a
negative impact on people and society in general. These contents can spread
stigmatization, fuel prejudices and contribute to social polarization. Furthermore,
they can emotionally affect people who are subject to discrimination and
perpetuate inequalities and tensions in society.

Social networks have taken steps to address this problem, implementing policies
and algorithms to detect and remove discriminatory content. However, due to the
massive and rapid nature of online information, there is still a chance for this
content to spread and cause harm.

To counter discriminatory content on social media, it is essential to promote media

literacy education and promote respect and tolerance online. It is also important for
users to report and report inappropriate content so that platforms can take
appropriate action. We all have a responsibility to contribute to a more inclusive
and respectful online environment, where constructive dialogue and mutual
understanding are promoted.

11
III. Developing Critical Reading Comprehension in the Digital Age

Source Evaluation: Given the proliferation of online information, it is essential to

verify the reliability of sources. Readers should learn to identify trustworthy
websites, media, and authors that provide accurate and substantiated information.

Distrust Sensational Content: Reading comprehension is compromised when we

get carried away by sensational headlines or shocking images without delving into
the complete content. It is important to learn to recognize and avoid clickbait and
focus on getting a more complete view of the topic.

Encourage Critical Thinking: Education in critical thinking is key to analyzing and

evaluating information objectively. This involves questioning assumptions,
identifying biases and analyzing arguments in a reasoned manner.

Practice Empathy and Tolerance: Reading comprehension is also about

developing empathy and tolerance for the opinions and perspectives of others. It is
important to learn to listen to different points of view and consider different contexts
before forming a solid opinion.

12
CONCLUSIONS

In the digital age, the challenge of reading comprehension is accentuated by the

predominant presence of influencers and discriminatory content. However, by
developing critical skills and promoting media literacy education, we can address
this challenge effectively. As readers, it is our responsibility to be aware of the
messages we consume and share online, to prevent the spread of misinformation
and harmful content. Only through critical and empathetic reading comprehension
can we make responsible use of technology and contribute to the construction of
an informed and cohesive society.

13
RECOMMENDATIONS

I recommend controlling what the little ones see and refraining from falling into this
whole network, always respecting everyone, each person sees what they do with
their life, no one has the right to give their opinion.
