Lesson Idea Name: Stephen Learns about the Moon

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd

Content Standard Addressed: S2E2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to

develop an understanding of the patterns of the sun and the moon and the sun’s effect
on Earth.
ISTE Technology Standard What would you like students to know and
Addressed: (Use the link to guide you to be able to do by the end of this lesson:
suggested student standards which come (Use the standards to define this statement.)
from the ISTE Student Standards Website)
I want students to be able to make
their own sway and be creative and
1.4 Innovative Designer they can grow and I can see them
Students use a variety of technologies within a being creative. With that I also want
design process to identify and solve problems by
creating new, useful or imaginative solutions. them to be able to know and
understand why moon phases
1.4.b happen and how they occur.

Students select and use digital tools to plan and

manage a design process that considers design
constraints and calculated risks.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

The student learning goal is that the students will learn about the 8 phases of the moon and
why they occur.

Selected Basic Productivity Tool: Sway

apply.)

X Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

X Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation: Write a paragraph describing how the lesson will be
implemented using the prompts as your guide:

I will plan for my students to create a sway of the phases of the moon, and explain what each
phase is. I will introduce sway as a simple tool that students can use to make their phases of
the moon. Students will get feedback from me by I will give them one on one feedback on
how well they did. I will conclude the lesson by having all students show their sway on a
parent day.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology: I will make sure that my students know and
understand the rules of being online. I will show them videos on how to properly be online
and use technology properly. I will also have the software where I can monitor and watch
what the kids are doing and accessing online.
TIPS: For an activity like this you should plan for collaboration, time limits, and/or focus on
learning goals. Another important way to manage engagement requires a written plan
prior to getting on the computer, called a storyboard. Use the terminology in the examples
listed here:
I will make sure that students will have ample help in learning how to use and create their
sway by having physical copies of step by step instruction as well as videos, and online notes.
I will also be able to walk around and help and have students who get it make sure to help
students around them.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

These support learning because it is including engagements and expression of one work.
Students are able to express themselves and create whatever they want withing the
brackets of learning.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

I feel the activities will impact student learning because they are going to not only learn
computer skills, but they will learn about the phases of the moon. I will most Definitely use
the videos to help introduce phases of the moon and then as they grow more in their
technology growth. I will want them to become more and more proficient with their
computer use due to our ever changing world.
