Lesson Idea Name: The Life Cycle of a Butterfly

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd Grade Science
Content Standard Addressed: S2L.1 Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about
the life cycles of different living organisms.

organism.
Global Collaborator- Element 1.7.c Students
contribute constructively to project teams,
assuming various roles and responsibilities to
work effectively toward a common goal.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

For students to be able to identify the butterfly life cycle and the name of each stage that the
butterfly goes through using sway to demonstrate their understanding.
Students should also be able to organize each stage of the butterfly life cycle.

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation: First, I will explain what we will be focusing on, I will then talk
about the goals for the activity that I am going to present. I will ask the students what
materials they could possibly use to help them. I will give them time to think and then I will
show them what Sway is. I will then bring up Sway so its shows on the smartboard and allow
students to be able to see how basics of the productivity tool, so they become familiar with
it. This would be where the students would have the time to ask any questions they may have
about the tool. I will then break the students up into groups of 4 so that way they have the
opportunity to engage together. Each group will have about 20 minutes to create their own
Sway presentation. I will be walking around the classroom and answer questions to clear up
any miss understandings. I will then finish by having a class discussion and they will give the
students the opportunity to express and difficulty they came across with the tool and what
they liked about the tool.

Managing the technology/engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that
gets students actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? How will you manage the
classroom behaviors on the technology:
I will give the students a time limit to create their presentations. I would say about an hour
however I know that maybe all students may not be able to complete the activity in that
amount of time because not all students work at the same pace so therefore, I would be
more than happy to allow more time if students need it. Students will be working in groups of
two which will allow them to increase their communication skills, be engaging, and putting
their ideas together to create a presentation. Students are going to have the opportunity to
be able to express their creativity because they will be getting to explore a new tool. They will
be reminded of the objective and will be offered reinforcement for them to successful.

using is Sway where they will create their digital story. This will support students who may be
visual learners because they will be experimenting with visual effects. Also, students who
may have trouble with hearing Sway a feature where each slide they create will have the
words along with the slides so that way they can follow at their own pace. Sway supports
many different learning styles in different ways.

Reflecting on enhanced learning:

After designing this lesson idea, I feel that it will allow students to be able to not only be
engaged but also be able to express their creativity which students love to do. Sway allows
anyone who uses it be able to put ideas together in a digital story and watch how the story
becomes something that comes to life. Students will have the chance to be able to work
together and effectively which will help them stay on task. The part of my lesson I am excited
and looking forward too is watching them come up with different ideas of how they want to
present their ideas of The Life Cycle of a Butterfly and at the end watching them present their
final product which makes me so excited. I think its pretty sweet how even the kids
themselves will be excited to share with their classmates what they have come up with.
