How to Create the Cover of
Your Digital Product
1. Go to https://bookbolt.io/2663.html and
sign up (Use code sueirven for 20% off for
life) or login to your account.
2. Now click your name in the upper right
corner. You will see a drop down menu. Click on
Book Bolt Studio.
3. This will open another tab. You may need to
login again. Use the same login info for your
https://bookbolt.io/2663.html account.
4. To start a new project click on the Project tab
in the upper left corner. Then select New
Project.
5. Now you will see a window pop up with some
options. Under Project Type you can select 7
different options from Paperback: Cover and
Interior down to Custom. If you want to make a
whole new project with a cover and interior
then you will select Paperback: Cover and
Interior. If you want to make just a cover or just
an interior then you can select one of those
options. I recommend ignoring Hardcover and
custom for now. I will be choosing Paperback:
Cover for this example.
6. Next is Project Name. Here you will name
your project so when you save it then you will
know later. You can name it something like
"Girls College Ruled Notebook", or "Girls Wide
Ruled Notebook", or "Floral Journal" etc.
7. After that is Trim Size. Here you will choose
what size of design you are working on. The
most common sizes will be 6 x 9 in, 7.5 x 9.25 in,
and 8.5 x 11 in but you can choose whatever
size you want. The most normal size for
composition notebook is 7.5x9.25 so let's
choose that.
8. Next is Interior & Paper Type. You will have 4
different options. The most common choice will
be Black & white interior with white paper but
you can also choose color if you are working on
something with color on the interior pages.
9. This step is only needed if you selected a
Cover and Interior or just Interior, (if you selected
just a cover then skip this step). Now you will
select No Bleed or Bleed under the Bleed option.
Bleed is a printing term that refers to when
printed items on a page, such as images or
illustrations, reach all the way to the edge of the
page. Most people will choose Bleed for this
option.
10. Lastly you will choose the Page Count for
the number of pages you are going to have in
your design. The Most common number of
pages is 100, 110, and 120. Choose whatever
you want to then click Create Project.
11. Next is the fun part! You get to create your
awesome covers of your journals or notebooks!
You will see a blank cover template. The left
side is the back of the notebook and the right
side is the front of the notebook. On the left
side you will see a bunch of different tools you
can use to make your covers.

Back Front
11. 1. The top button that looks like a pencil and
paper is called the Free Drawing button. This
will let you draw on your design using your
mouse. I recommend staying away from this
button unless you have a digital artist or graphic
designer background.
11. 2. The button that looks like a
circle/star/square/heart is the Elements
button. This button will popout a menu of a
bunch of different shapes that you can use on
your design. To select a shape just click it and it
will appear on your design. Then you can resize
it or move it around as you like.
11. 3. The box with a T in it is the Text button.
You can click this button to select from 5
different text options to add to your design. Just
click the text you want and you can change it on
the design.
11. 4. Next is the button that looks like 2 small
squares with a mountain on the front. This is the
Files button. You will use this button to upload
your cover images, interior images, or labels into
bookbolt. Personally I use Canva for most of my
images. Go to Canva here
https://partner.canva.com/sueirven for more
information about Canva. But you can use any
copyright free image you would like to. You can
also use Pixabay and Unsplash. Make sure you
read the use licenses of websites to learn if you
can use their images commercially or not.
Click the Files button then click on upload
image to find the image you want to upload
from your computer.
You can even create folders of specific images if
you want with the Create Folder text next to
the upload file button.

Then add a name for your folder, I created one

for SketchBook.
You can add any images to a specific folder by
selecting the images, then right clicking on the
image, then left click on cut.

Finally go to your folder to add the selected

images by right clicking in the folder, then left
click on paste.
11. 5. The button that looks like a maze is called
the Page Templates button. This is where you will
find the premade interior templates for bookbolt.
You can even search for specific ones and favorite
the ones you use the most.
11. 6. The button that looks like a brick wall is
called the Make Pattern button. You can use
this if you want to make patterns with a specific
image.
In this example, I want to make a pattern with
this unicorn, so I would select the unicorn then
click on the Make Pattern button.
A pop up will appear asking if I want to create a
pattern with selected object, click on ok.
You can make the pattern as big as you want by
stretching the pattern from the corners or side
circles.
Another way to make the selected pattern
image smaller or bigger is by clicking on Pattern
Options on the upper left corner. Then change
the scale to your desired size.
11. 7. Next is the button that looks like a mask
called the Mask button. Masking is a good way
to make your text standout. Masking is when
you overlay an image over your text, and then
fill that text with that image.
11. 8. The button that looks like a paint brush is
called the Distress Effect button. This will let
you give images a "distressed" kind of look.
11. 9. Last is a button that looks like a tic,tac,toe
board. This is the Grid Lines button. This is a
very important button. I recommend before
starting to add images you should click this
button.
You will see the Add Grid button click that. You
will get a pop up window asking you how many
grid lines you want to have. I recommend using
4 but you can try out other numbers if you like.
Adding this grid lines will make it much easier
to center your images and labels.
12. Primarily you will be using Elements, Text,
Files, Page Templates, and the Grid Lines
button. I also use the elements and with text to
put text on the cover or create labels like
"Dream Journal" or "Baby Diary" etc.
labels like "Dream Journal" or "Baby Diary" etc.
13. I would suggest looking at the top journals
and notebooks for ideas and how to structure
your notebook. But make them your own!
14. Make sure that if you are using an image to
cover the entire cover if you want them
covered completely. Including covering the
orange lines. If you don't cover the orange lines
your cover won't fit correctly and you will have
white lines when the customer buys and prints it
out.
This is an example of doing the right way:

This is an example of doing the wrong way (The

orange lines aren't covered!):
15. After you have finished making your cover
then you will want to download it. To do this
click on the Project tab in the upper left corner
and select Download this Project (CMYK). The
CMYK version is better for printing which is
what we are doing with KDP. You will get a
popup saying Your download should have
automatically started. If not, download here.
Then you will get a file automatically
downloaded for you to your computer that you
will use later when uploading your cover for
listing on your Amazon KDP account. This will
be a zip folder containing the cover. If you
selected to do Cover and Interior then the folder
will contain 2 seperate files, one cover and one
interior for listing.
