Benefits of Process Bus
Field installation – process level

From... 1. Almost no copper cable’s, no cable trays or

they are reduced in size - less civil works.
Merging units mounted in field in outdoor relay
to cabinets close to primary equipment.
2. No commissioning and maintenance of
copper cables in the field and control room.
3. Fiber optic and MU’s with self monitoring
features
4. No open circuits or secondary wiring

Page 5 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2022 | SI EA

Benefits of Process Bus
Control room - station

1. No secondary cables, terminals - smaller relay

cabinets, less relay cabinets in substation.
2. Easy implementable control, protection and
automation functions – no copper cables to
connect.
3. Les protection IED’s because of optimization
4. Easy to maintain and retrofit
5. Easy to test – no need to switch off substation
during protection commissioning or maintenance.

Process Bus interoperability
Definition of IN within a Stream

Status quo – IEC 61850 Standard

❖ The current IEC 61850 Edition 2.1 standard does not contain a
clear definition of the direction for the neutral-point current (IN).
→ Different implementations across the vendors are existing.
Protection IA
→ It is important that the merging unit and process-bus client follow
the same convention for the IN direction. Either they are both set to
IN = -3I0 or both are set to IN = +3I0 (recommended). IB 3I0 = IA + IB + IC

Outlook – IEC 61850 Standard IC

❖ In one of the subsequent revisions of the IEC 61850 standard, the
direction is defined as IN = +3I0.
IN = -3I0 vs. IN = 3I0

Siemens SIPROTEC Solution

❖ To ensure interoperability between different vendors the direction
can be defined in DIGSI 5 for the merging unit and process-bus
client independently. This requires V8.80 of DIGSI and devices.

Process bus solution for SET Los Sauces substation
of Luz del Sur S.A.A

• Luz del Sur is one of the largest distribution system operators

(DSO) in Peru supplying almost 1.2 million customers with
electricity in the area south-east of the capital, Lima.
This gives them a national market share of almost one third.
• The utility is currently expanding their 220 kV network.
The new 220 kV high-voltage Substation Transmission (SET)
Los Sauces was commissioned in February 2020.
• Substation Transmission (SET) Los Sauces is part of a major
transmission investment plan to expand and modernize the grid to
serve the growing number of customers and demand for power.

Process bus solution for SET Los Sauces substation
Solution/service description

In February 2020, the new SET Los Sauces substation was energized in Lima, Peru.
The entire protection and control system is based on Siemens technology:
• Core of the digital substation solution is the new SIPROTEC 6MU85 merging unit (MU)
based on SIPROTEC 5 system.
• 14 units of 6MU85 and various SIPROTEC 5 protection and automation devices,
including line differential, transformer differential, busbar differential protection and fault
recording.
• SICAM AK3 remote terminal unit and SICAM SCC SCADA system are used on the
station level.
• 6 Ruggedcom switches are used for redundant PRP Ethernet network.

Luz del Sur benefits in CAPEX

• Less wiring:
Replacing miles of copper cables with cost-effective fiber-optic cables
saves not only cost for civil works, but also project execution time.
• Faster commissioning:
Enables significant installation and maintenance savings
with increased operational flexibility and performance.
• Higher safety:
Creating much safer working environment by avoiding all dangerous voltages from
protection and control cubicles as MU digitizes the data already in the switchyard.
• Higher flexibility:
Enables interoperability and simplifies future extensions of substation
• Space saving:
Primary part and secondary become smaller – less space is required to build substations.
Luz del Sur has a lot of substations in Lima, Peru.

Process bus solution
Luz del Sur lessons learned and conclusions

• Process bus based protection and control system is a standard for all
future substations at Luz del Sur (greenfield and brownfield).
• SIEMENS solution provides easier separation of process bus network
from station bus to simplify substation commissioning and maintenance
for Luz de Sur.
It is now the standard for process bus installation at Luz de Sur.
• Maintenance crews had to be trained on protection testing procedures
and tools for process bus substations.
• SAT time has been reduced to the primary connection testing.
Complete protection and control testing during FAT at SIEMENS.
• Proper documentation of GOOSE and SMV's are important for
troubleshooting, test and commissioning.

SEMENS Peru project experience

• SIEMENS Peru first process bus based

substation has been implemented in 2015
– we had experience in such project execution.

• Since SIEMENS is a leader of IEC 61850

implementation world wide, it was just a minor
step to learn to work with SMV’s.

• Our engineers had to make an upskilling in

PAC systems including and applying setting up
network communications such as VLANs,
MAC Filtering and so on.

• During the FAT we had to implement and test

the complete protection and automation
system to minimize SAT time.

Page 27 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2022 | SI EA

The process bus solution allows us time savings during
commissioning and site tests in our SET Los Sauces substation
and contributed to the development of new digital skills of our
technical teams.
• Willam Caman - Project Engineer, Luz del Sur

Page 28 Unrestricted | © Siemens 2022 | SI EA

Together with our local Siemens team in Peru, we are proud that our
customer Luz del Sur is planning to adopt process bus technology as the
standard for the implementation of all its new high-voltage substations.
Industry’s stringent safety and operational requirements can be met in a
more cost-efficient, compact and simple way.
