1. What are the three (3) things that you significantly learned from the reading? Please
start by saying ' Before reading the article, I used to think that (insert thought). After
reading the article, I now think that (insert thought)'.
Before reading the article, I did not really believe that a person’s identity had an effect on the
community on the scale of social issues, but after reading the article I now think that even
though an identity is personal, to some it may be something new and throw them off guard
from the social norms that they know. This just means that as the technology we use
evolves the society and norms we have will also change and we should always be open to
new ideas and refrain from discriminating something just because it is new to us. Before
reading the article, I used to think that immigrants in the US had the same privileges and
rights to US citizens but after reading the article I now think that discrimination also happens
between immigrants and citizens in the US. Reaching America does not mean you get to
live the American Dream, it may sound good in paper but living their as an immigrant might
be hard and full of challenges. That is why people should really think twice before leaving
the comfort of their homeland to live out their dream in another country. Before reading the
article, I used to think that School is only a place of learning. After reading the article, I now
think that School is a smaller version of the society we would face when we grow up to be
adults. In school, we meet different people, some we like, some we don’t, but that does not
mean that we cannot work together as a class when a class project is given to us. In a way,
society is the same, we will be working with strangers until we get used to them.
2. What three (3) things about the reading are unclear to you?
The first thing unclear to me is the difference about cohesion of identities to integrating all
these different identities in one place. I would take a guess and say that integrating identities
involves introducing one to another while cohesion would define how these two identities
actually get along. Another thing unclear to me is with how diverse the identities are people
still reject things that they do not understand. Modern society involves different people with
different backgrounds and different cultures, but this does not mean that we discriminate
those who are different from us. This difference should encourage us to understand each
other and form a stronger bond with each other. The last thing unclear to me in the reading
is the concept of Identity Politics. Identity politics may highlight the inequalities and injustices
pointed towards them but that does not mean that change will happen. In order for change
to occur, both parties involved should change and compromise to meet each other’s
requirements.
3. What three (3) questions that you want to ask about the reading?
 What is the main difference between cohesion and integration when it comes to
identities?
 What can Identity Politics do to change the social norms of society?
 How big of an impact does the government and institutions such as the Church have
on the framework of society?
