SUMMARY OF BASIC ANAESTHESIA TRAINING

At G.R. Medical College, Gwalior, INDIA (Tertiary referral Center)

First 12 months: Involved in preoperative assessment and conduct of anaesthesia under


supervision. I was on a 24 hour on call with 1:4 rota. Gained experience in handing ASA1 &
ASA2 cases independently towards the end of the first year and ASA 3 and 4 cases under
supervision in the following specialities.

* General Surgical Anaesthesia (4 months): Training under supervision for a wide


variety of cases including Herniotomies, Appendicectomies, Amputations,
Laparotomies, Laparoscopic Surgeries, Mastectomies and Thyroid Surgeries.

* Orthopaedic Anaesthesia (3 months): Training in anaesthesia for reductions,


external and internal fixations, arthroplasties, total knee replacements and surgeries of
spine.

* ENT, Plastic and Maxillofacial (3 months): Training in aneasthesia for


Tonsillectomies, Septoplasties, Cleft lip and palate surgeries, Mastoidectomies and
Laryngeal surgeries.

* Urology (2 months): Training in anaesthesia of Cystoscopies, Urethroscopies, TURP


and Nephrectomies.

SUMMARY OF ADVANCE ANAESTHESIA TRAINING


In last two years of residency: Rotations in Cardio thoracic, Obstetric, Paediatric and
Neuro-anaesthesia. One month each in Pain & Palliative Unit, Medical / Surgical ICU and
Accident & Emergency department.

* Obstetric and Gynaecology anaesthesia (4 months): Training in obstetric


anaesthesia for caesarean sections. Anaesthesia for Gynaescological procedures like
Hysterectomies (Abdominal/Vaginal), Ovarian malignancy surgeries and
Laparoscopic surgeries.

* Paediatric Anaesthesia (4 months): Training in starting Paediatric IV lines, LMA


insertion, Intubations, Arterial Lines and Caudal blocks.

* Neuro-anaesthesia (2 months): Cases under supervision: VP-Shunts, Brain abscess.


Subdural and Extradural Hematomas and Brain Tumors.

* Cardiothoracic anaesthesia (2 months): Cases under supervision: Video assisted


Thoracoscopy/Biopsy. Lobectomies / Pneumonectomies, Bronchoscopies and Closed
Mitral Valvotomy.

* Pain Clinic (1 month): 1 month training that included patient counselling, Therapy
according to WHO pain ladder and simple nerve blocks.

* ICU Training (1 month): I had posting in 6-bedded ICU with a wide range of cases
including Bronchial Asthmas, Poisonings, Cardiac Hepatic and Renal failures.

* Academic programme: Included five teaching sessions in a week, presenting cases


& seminars and journal clubs. Attending monthly hospital mortality meetings.
