PCA-Human Resource Frame Worksheet


Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the human resource frame
2. Apply the human resource frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

My situation was a meeting that our store had at Starbucks. This meeting happened because
we needed to reinforce the processes of the organization because a lot of stores had an issue of
not following the correct processes. Within this meeting, we did things such as play games that
helped to understand these processes better. My role within the organization is a shift
supervisor.

2) Describe how the human resources of the organization influenced the situation.

It is stated in the text “The human resource frame centers on what organizations and people
do to and for one another” (Deal & Bolman, 2021). This meeting came about because the team
was not following the proper procedures in order for the business to run. This impacted the
business very negatively which meant that corporate had to do something. This meeting
explained everything which included the role that the Barista’s needed to play in order for
everything to run smoothly. They went as far as to explain why they made the decisions that
they did for each action. This meeting served to reinforce the policies that were already there.

Human resources were present in this meeting because everything we heard about explained
why the people who work for Starbucks are important to the business. They explained the
reasons the policies were in place and why they were there. It clearly stated what the people
could do for the organization and why it had to be that way. This meeting happened because
corporate believed everyone needed a reminder of what we were doing and why. This meeting
was important because it clearly had a cause and effect. The cause was that the employees were
not following the proper procedure. The effect was the negative impact it had following after.
This was a direct example of human resources because it shows that the baristas the impact they
had on the business.

3) Recommend how you would use the human resources for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

I believe this was a bad way to go about handling the situation. It is stated in the text that
human resources is about showing what an organization and people can do to and for each other.
The problem was not that everyone forgot the policies, it was that they felt they were unfair.
They focused too much on what the people could do for the organization. What they should
have done is that they also should have provided solutions to some of the problems with the
policies. Show the employees what the organization can do for them. That would be a great way
to handle the meeting a lot better and it would serve to motivate more people knowing that the
organization is doing things for them as well.

Every week, we have a partner survey that we can fill out about how our shifts go. People
provide corporate feedback about how the policies feel very unfair. In an article from Shrm
“While it's tempting to think the problem will go away if ignored, that never happens—ever”
(Gurchiek, 2022). What people put in their surveys should be acknowledged and this meeting
could have been a great way to go about doing that. They should have taken time to review a lot
of the feedback they received and during the meeting, they could have talked about that. An
example of this would be changing some of the existing policies so that they could work out for
both sides.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

What I believe they did correctly is that they saw the negative impact that the people had on
the organization. They realized that the employees could have a negative impact on the business
if they did not follow the procedures. They knew they needed to take action which I believe was
the correct thing to do. However, it is just as important to understand how to do it correctly as it
does to understand that something need to change. Having a meeting with all of the stores I also
believe was a good thing to do. This gets all of the employees together so that everyone can
understand the organization and everyone can be on the same page.
Some of the things I believe were not done correctly is the emphasis that they had on
what everyone can do for the organization. The meeting was all about bringing people to
understand these proper procedures. There should be part of the meeting where they explain
what the organization can do for them. They need to understand why people are unhappy with
the current procedures and change them the best they can. If I were to change one thing about
this situation understanding this frame, I would go through the feedback given to me and make
changes to the procedures to show fairness towards the employees. If people are unhappy with
how things are currently, they will not become happy with it because it was talked about in a
meeting.
