A speech gives you freedom to speak. The power of speech is undeniable because giving a speech is
using your rights to voice things out. By giving a speech, we can express our opinions and views. We
can stand up and fight for what we believe in.
Controversy attracts people like ants to honey. Whether it’s something that happens in the
neighbourhood or in the political arena, it evokes discussions that last months or years.
A controversial persuasive speech involves selecting a topic that is controversial in nature and it must
be one that either stands the test of time or belongs to the current world we live in.

1. The guiding rule here is that learners should talk to their audience, not at them.
2. Learners should choose a topic that is important to them. Sincere enthusiasm and personal
conviction about the subject automatically aid the quality of the presentation. Stock or common
topics should be avoided: to be successful, these need an individualised approach.
3. The speech should not be a mere collection of facts gleaned from one source or other: it must
present a point of view and be persuasive. Facts should be clearly integrated within the fabric
of the speech.
4. Ideas must be presented in a clearly structured way, with an effective introduction and a firm
conclusion.
5. Content should be enriched with sufficient information and ideas.
6. Language should be sophisticated without being overly formal and should display a good
vocabulary.
7. The prepared speech should not be presented in a 'public speaking manner'.
8. While the speech should be well rehearsed to ensure confidence, it should never be learned
off by heart or read from full notes. A spontaneous manner and the confidence from knowing
the topic well are what the audience appreciates most.
9. Learners should use only cue cards with words/ phrases on these. A full text is distracting and
causes learners to read. Reading from a written text should be heavily penalised.
10. Learners should stand in a relaxed manner, and use natural gestures, body language and
facial expression to convey their meaning.
11. Voice needs to be varied in terms of pitch, speed, and volume.
12. Pauses should be used between sections. Never rush - the audience needs time to absorb
what is being said.
13. Eye contact with the whole audience is essential.
• You must create a speech around any topic based on your stance.
• Your speech must clearly express your ideas and opinions, showing awareness of your
audience, and must be argumentative in nature.
• You need to focus on your expression, pace and intonation when delivering your speech.
• You must include a bibliography of references you have used for your task.
• You are reminded that this forms part of your oral mark. You therefore need to give this
task your full commitment.
