Marina Street is a small area within Barangay 4, that is located along the coastal line of

San Jose, Antique. The area is free from landslide hazards due to its distance from mountains,

steep terrains, and sloped areas. Since it is in the coastal area, inevitably, the area is at risk for

floods during storm surges. Within the community, there are numerous hazards present and are

continuously experienced, which are: High Tide / Sea Level Rise, Strong Winds, Tropical Storm

Surges, and Flooding.

Coastal hazards include unavoidable risks to life and property generated by: coastal

flooding, waves, high winds and waves, short-term and long-term shoreline erosion, storm

surges, and sea level rise. Each of these natural hazards creates a series of associated risks to

coastal communities from hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces on structures generated by

coastal floodwaters and breaking waves, debris impacts, undermining of structures by scour and

erosion and damage from high winds. A single severe coastal storm is capable of generating

multiple short-term and long-term hazards (Herrington, n.d.).

In order to mitigate the hazards, the following interventions must be done:

 The Barangay must coordinate with the government to create a breakwater in order to

reduce the impact of the waves during storm surges.

 The drainage system must be fixed and improved throughout in order to reduce stagnant

waters and flooding.

 Provide hazard and disaster information where and when it is needed (NANOOS: Coastal

Hazard Mitigation, 2023).

 Each household must prepare an emergency/survival kit with flashlights, batteries, food,

first aid kit, etc., in case of emergencies.

 The seawall must be maintained with damages repaired, in order to maintain the integrity

of the structure the helps in preventing severe flooding throughout the area.

 The barangay must arrange the regularity of coast guard duties and surveillance around

the area, since drowning incidences has occurred in the past.
