1) The number of casing strings:

Figure 1. The pore pressure and fracture gradient from logs profile

Firstly, the number of casing strings and the casing settings should be determined.
The number of casing strings can be determined from the Figure 1 above starting from
the depth 12000 ft, then going up until Fracture Gradient Less Kick Margin. This
intersection gives Intermediate casing which is approximately 9400 ft. Then, the line
goes to Mud Density Trip Margin, and goes up until Fracture Gradient Less Kick Margin.
This intersection corresponds to depth of 3800 ft which refers to Surface casing. It is
given that the Production casing is set at 12000 ft. Moreover, the Conductor casing is
given to be 200 ft. Therefore, it was determined that there should be 4 casing strings.
Table 1 below, summarizes all casing’s depth and outer diameters of casings.
Table 1. Casing depth and outer diameters
Casing type Depth, ft Casing size OD, inch
Conductor casing 200 30
Surface casing 3800 20
Intermediate casing 9400 13
Production casing 12000 7

The outer diameters of casing are usually proposed by manufacturers with some standard
values. From the presentation of Casing design, it was selected that conductor casing OD is 30
inches. Other casing diameters are selected similarly. The production casing OD is given to be 7
inches.

Mud densities were identified from Figure 1, by stretching vertical lines up to mud density axis
and tabulated in Table 2.

Table 3. Given design factors

Collapse DF 1.1
Burst DF 1.1
Pipe body yield DF 1.5
Joint strengh DF 1.8

The Collapse load is calculated for Production casing as following:

At surface:
 Pe=(mud density)*(free fall gravity)*(depth)=16.8*0.052*0=0 psi
 Pi=0 psi
 Pc=(Pe-Pi)*(Collapse DF)=0 psi
At casing shoe:
 Pe= 0.052*16.8*12000= 10482 psi
 Pi= 0 psi
 Pc= (Pe-Pi)*collapse DF= 11531 psi
The burst load is calculated as following:
At surface:
 Pe= 0.052*9*0=0 psi
 Pi = Shut in BHP – Pressure due to Gas Column
 Pi=16.8*0.052*12000-0.1*12000=9283 psi
 Pb= ( Pi-Pe)* Burst DF=10211 psi
At casing shoe:
 Pe=0.052*9*12000=5616 psi
 Pi = Pressure due to Fluid Column + Surface Pressure due to gas leak
 Pi= 16.8*0.052*12000+10211=20694 psi
 Pb= (Pi-Pe)*Burst DF=16586 psi

The collapse and burst load calculations were performed in the same manner as for
production casing.

The V-150 (1)38# is selected since it is the cheapest type of grade and it satisfies the
collapse and burst load limits also SF is more than 1.8.
