Q. 1 Attempt any Four of the following; 08 M
a) List any two thermal power plants in maharashtra with installed capacity.
Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station - 2920 MW.
Koradi Thermal Power Station - 3660 MW.
b) Define fusion & fission related to nuclear power plant.

The main difference between these two processes is that fission is the splitting of an atom
into two or more smaller ones while fusion is the fusing of two or more smaller atoms into
a larger one.
c) Classify the hydro electric power plants in detail.
The hydroelectric power plants may be classified according to:- A. Classification According
to the Extent of Water Flow Regulation Available B. Classification According to Availability
of Water Head C. Classification According to Type of Load Supplied D. Classification of
Hydroelectric Power Plants Based on Installed Capacity.

d) List out any four applications of Diesel power plant.

Central Power Stations: … Standby Power Stations: ...
Peak Load Plants: ...Emergency Plants: …

e) List any two hydro power plants in maharashtra with installed capacity.
Koyna Hydroelectric Project - 1,956 MW.
Bhira - 80MW.

Q.2 Attempt any THREE out of the following

a) State & explain the factors for site selection of hydro electric power plant.
The most important thing is the availability of water. Soil type, Topography, Land use and
land cover, slope, rainfall data, contour are the parameters required for selecting the
suitable site. The selection of small hydropower plants can be done by using the satellite
data and other data sources.

b) Draw a layout of coal thermal power plant and label it.

c) Explain the working of Pumped storage power plant.
Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is a type of hydroelectric energy storage. It is a
configuration of two water reservoirs at different elevations that can generate power as
water moves down from one to the other (discharge), passing through a turbine.Pumped-
storage power plants are structured around two bodies of water, an upper and a lower
reservoir1 (see the diagram below). At times of very high electricity consumption on the
grid, the water from the upper reservoir, carried downhill by a penstock, drives a turbine
and a generator to produce electricity, which is used to meet the increased demand. When
demand is low, electricity is taken from the grid to power a pump that sends water from
the lower reservoir back up to the upper reservoir, where it can be discharged again to
drive the turbine. In this way, the water in the upper reservoir constitutes a stock of
gravitational potential energy , ready to be used when needed. The stored energy is
proportional to the volume of water and the height from which it falls.

d) Explain how nuclear waste is disposed?

Nuclear waste must be processed to make it safe for disposal. This includes its
collection and sorting; reducing its volume and changing its chemical and
physical composition, such as concentrating liquid waste; and finally, its
conditioning so it is immobilized and packaged before storage and
disposal. Before selecting a waste processing strategy, it is essential to know and
understand the waste source and rate of waste generation, as well as the
amounts and characteristics of the waste. Characterization is a technique that
provides information on the physical, chemical and radiological properties of
the waste, which helps identify appropriate safety requirements and potential
processing options. It also ensures compatibility and compliance with accepted
storage and disposal criteria. There are three main steps in the processing of
nuclear waste: pre-treatment, treatment and conditioning.
