Test in Practical & Analytical Chemistry
Question -1. a, (
Salts A, B, C, D and E undergo reactions (i) to (v) respectively. Identify the anion present in these salts on
the basis of these reactions.
i. When AgNO3 solution is added to a solution of A, a white precipitate, insoluble in dilute nitric acid is
formed.
ii. Addition of dil. HCl to B produces a gas which turns lead acetate paper black.
iii. When a freshly prepared solution of FeSO4 is added to a solution of C and
and conc. H2SO4 is gently poured from the side of the test tube, a brown
ring is formed.
iv. When dil. H2SO4 is added to D a gas is produced which turns acidified K2Cr2O7 solution from orange to
green.
v. Addition of dil. HCl to E produced an effervescence. The gas produced turns lime water milky but does
not effect acidified K2Cr2O7 solution.
vi. How will the addition of barium chloride solution help to distinguish
between dil. HCl and dil. H2SO4.
b. Give one test each to distinguish between the following pairs of
chemicals:-
i. Zinc nitrate solution and Calcium nitrate solution
ii. Sodium nitrate solution ad sodium chloride solution
iii. Iron [III] chloride solution and copper chloride solution
c. State what is observed when excess of ammonia passed through an
aqueous Solution of lead nitrate.
2. State one chemical test to distinguish the following pairs
i. Sodium carbonate and sodium sulphate
ii. Ferrous nitrate and Lead nitrate
iii. Manganese dioxide and Copper (II) oxide.
iv. Copper carbonate and copper sulphite
v. Lead chloride and lead sulphide
vi. Iron [II] Sulphate and iron [III] Sulphate
vii. Hydrogen chloride and Chlorine gas
viii. Lead nitrate and zinc nitrate
ix. Sulphur dioxide and Hydrogen sulphide gas.
x. Carbon dioxide and Sulphur dioxide
3. a. State one appropriate observation for each of the following:
i. Concentrated sulphuric acid is added drop wise to a crystal of hydrated
copper sulphate.
ii. Copper sulphide is t reated with dilute hydrochloric acid
iii. Excess of chlorine gas is reacted with ammonia gas.
iv. A few drops of dilute hydrochloric acid are added to silver nitrate solution followed by addition of
ammonium hydroxide solution.
v Ammonium hydroxide solution is added to copper (II) nitrate solution
in small quantities and then in excess.
vi Ammonium hydroxide solution is added to zinc nitrate solution in
minimum quantities and then in excess.
vii. Lead nitrate crystals are heated in a hard glass test tube.
b. . Identify the following substances which are underlined:
i. An alkaline gas which produces dense white fumes when reacted with
hydrogen chloride gas.
ii. A gas which does not conduct electricity in the liquid state but conducts
electricity when dissolved in water
iii. A dilute mineral acid which forms a white precipitate when treated with
Barium chloride solution.
ii.. An alkali which on dissociation produces a high concentration of hydroxyl ions.
. iii. An ion which combines with a polar covalent molecule to form an ammonium ion.
QUESTION 4
a. Copy and complete the following which summarizes the effect of adding a small amount of sodium
hydroxide to various salt solutions followed by excess of reagent, and then adding ammonium hydroxide
[ammonia solution] in a small amount followed by an excess to another sample of each of the salt solution.
