Differentiation (Rates of Change and Approximation)

Total marks: 25, Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes

1. The base of a closed rectangular box is a square of side x cm and its height is 8 cm. Given that the side
of the square base increases at a constant rate of 0.05 cm/s, find the rate of increase of the volume and
of the total surface area when the total surface area of the box is 210 cm2. (6)

2. The volume of a sphere with radius r cm is increasing at a constant rate of 3 cm3/s.

Find the rate, in cm2/s, at which the surface area of the sphere is increasing when r=10. (6)

3. The length of each side of a cube S1 is increasing at a constant rate of 0.1m/s.

(a) Find, in m3 /s, the rate of increase of the volume of the cube S1 when the length of each side of the
cube is 2m. (4)

The total surface area of a different cube S2 is increasing at a constant rate of 0.05m2 /s.

(b) Find in m3 /s, the rate of increase of the volume of the cube S2 when the length of each side of the
cube is 6m. (5)

4. Given that 𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 𝑐𝑜𝑠2𝑥, find an approximate change in y, to 3 significant figures, when x increases
𝜋 𝜋
from 6 to ( 6 + 0.002) 𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑠. (4)
