ACTIVITY 2 – TYPES OF CLAIMS

I. Analyze each statement below. Identify whether it claims a Fact, Value, Policy.

Policy 1. Violators of the community quarantine should be subjected to manual labor

rather than imprisonment.
Fact 2. The number of online learners has risen due to the pandemic experienced in
the country.
Policy 3. We should advocate proper waste disposal to prevent disastrous
consequences and save lives.
Value 4. Staying with a family with limited resources is more valuable than working
abroad.
____Policy ____5. The government should pursue scholarship programs, especially to those
identified marginalized sectors affected by COVID-19.
__ _Value 6. Flip-flops are a better type of footwear to use in beaches because it is light,
waterproof and easy to wear.
Fact 7. The implementation of Community Quarantine has prevented the outbreak

II. Identify the following statements as claim of fact, value or policy. Briefly explain your
choice. (2 points each)

Example:
1. Onsite education is definitely superior when compared with online studying because
onsite education allows for one-on-one interactions, better classroom assessment, and
supportive exercises which form the basic constructs of proper learning.
ANSWER: This is a claim of value, because it claims that onsite learning is better or
more effective than online learning because of various reasons that construct proper
learning.
2. The Filipinos of the past became strong-willed, earnest, and adventurous by necessity:
they had to brave the seas, clear the forest, erect towns and cities upon the wilderness in
order to establish communities.
ANSWER: This is a claim of value, because it claims the braveness of the Filipinos and
gives value to the Filipino society which makes us who we are today.

3. To ensure the accomplishment of this task of national spiritual reconstruction, we shall

formulate and adopt a social code that can be explained in the schools, preached from the
pulpits, and taught in the streets and plazas, and in the remotest corners of our land.
ANSWER: This is a claim of policy, because it claims that formulating and adopting a
social code ensures the accomplishment of the task of national spiritual
reconstruction.

4. Within ten years, destruction of forest will cause hundreds of plant extinction.
ANSWER: This is a claim of fact, because a forest is made of hundreds of different
plants.
