ACTIVITY 2 - Types of Claims
I. Analyze each statement below. Identify whether it claims a Fact, Value, Policy.
II. Identify the following statements as claim of fact, value or policy. Briefly explain your
choice. (2 points each)
Example:
1. Onsite education is definitely superior when compared with online studying because
onsite education allows for one-on-one interactions, better classroom assessment, and
supportive exercises which form the basic constructs of proper learning.
ANSWER: This is a claim of value, because it claims that onsite learning is better or
more effective than online learning because of various reasons that construct proper
learning.
2. The Filipinos of the past became strong-willed, earnest, and adventurous by necessity:
they had to brave the seas, clear the forest, erect towns and cities upon the wilderness in
order to establish communities.
ANSWER: This is a claim of value, because it claims the braveness of the Filipinos and
gives value to the Filipino society which makes us who we are today.
4. Within ten years, destruction of forest will cause hundreds of plant extinction.
ANSWER: This is a claim of fact, because a forest is made of hundreds of different
plants.
