EDUCATION OF

DR. JOSE RIZAL

Jose Rizal obtained various educational attainments in
multiple aspects and contexts. His mother, who taught
him to read and pray and encouraged him to write
poetry, was Jose Rizal's first teacher.

RIZAL IN BIÑAN
On June 1869, Rizal went to Biñan along with his
brother Paciano, where he was taught by
Maestro Justiniano. He outperformed all Biñan
boys in terms of academic. He was a step ahead
of them in Spanish, latin, and other courses.

RIZAL IN ATENEO
Rizal enrolled at Ateneo de Manila in 1872. He belonged
to the group that included Spaniards, mestizos, and
Filipinos where he was regarded as a failure and was
assigned to the bottom of the class. But by the end of the
month, he had become Emperor and had received a prize:
a religious painting. He then graduated on March 23, 1877,
with a sobresaliente (excellent) grade and 5 medals. He
received a Bachelor of Arts degree.

MEDICAL STUDIES IN
UNIVERSITY OF STO. THOMAS
After deciding to pursue a medical career, he continued his
education at UST, where he completed a year in Philosophy
and Letters. He made the decision for him to become a doctor
so that he could treat his mother's failing eyesight. He majored
in Cosmology, Metaphysics, Theodicy, and Philosophy
History. During his last year at the University, Rizal had a
global mark of Notable (Very Good) in all of his disciplines,
and he was the second best student in a decimated class of
seven who passed the medicine course.

ACADEMIC JOURNEY TO SPAIN

Year 1882 to 1885, Rizal studied in Universidad Central
de Madrid in Spain, taking up two courses: Philosophy
and Letters, and Medicine. He finished his studies with
higher grades, and was awarded with the Degree of
Licentiate in Philosophy and Letters. He also conferred
the degree of Licentiate in Medicine on June 21, 1884.

OPHTHALMOLOGY IN EUROPE
Jose Rizal pursued a career in ophthalmology by
studying in Paris and Germany. He chose this
specialization out of all the branches because he wanted
to help his mother's failing eyesight. He also studied at
the University of Paris and finished his eye specialty
course at the University of Heidelberg in 1887.
