Text Synopsis

Directions: Read the text synopsis.

Rikki-tikki-tavi is a mongoose. One day a flood washes him out of his family burrow. A small boy finds
him. The boy’s family takes him in and saves him.

Every mongoose is very curious. Rikki-tikki is no different. He makes friends with the boy Teddy and his
parents. He eats the family’s food and sleeps in the nursery with Teddy.

Outside in the garden Rikki-tikki meets a tailorbird named Darzee and his wife. Darzee explains that a
black cobra named Nag ate one of their babies the day before. Rikki-tikki goes to talk to Nag to try to
persuade him not to eat any more of Darzee’s fledglings. Nag’s wife, Nagaina, then tries to bite Rikki-
tikki. Luckily, he figures it out in time and bites her.

Just then Teddy comes walking into the garden and is almost bitten by a small brown snake named
Karait. Instead, Rikki-tikki bites the snake and kills it, saving Teddy. Teddy’s parents are very happy and
relieved.

Later Rikki-tikki finds Nag waiting in the bathroom to spring on Teddy’s parents and bite them. He bites
Nag instead, killing him.

Darzee celebrates by singing a song. Rikki-tikki warns him not to attract attention because Nagaina is still
alive. Sure enough, Nagaina soon finds Darzee’s wife and tries to attack her. Rikki-tikki makes it there in
time and first bites the snakes’ eggs, killing the young cobras. Nagaina tries to run away, but Rikki-tikki
chases after her and follows her into her nest in the ground.

Everyone assumes Rikki-tikki is dead, but finally he emerges from the hole. He says, “It is all over.” He
has killed Nagaina. Everyone is safe.
