Practice Problem 2

Air-entrained concrete is specified in the

design of a slab – on grade. f’c = 35 is
required at 28 days age. Targeted slump is
75mm and the nominal maximum size of
coarse aggregates to be used is 25 mm.
Cement has a sp. gr. of 3.0 and sand has a
rodded (or oven-dry) sp.gr. of 2.64. Gravel
has a sp.gr. of 2.68, rodded (oven-dry)
bulk density of 1600 kg/m3, and bulk
volume of 0.67 m3. Moisture content will
be neglected. To attain the desired slump
and compressive strength, the
recommended water content is 135 kg/
m3 and the mix must be designed for a
water – cement ratio of 0.31. Assume that
the target air content is 8% and no
correction for effects of moisture content
will be undertaken. For a trial mix of 1.0
m3 , determine the following:

1. The volume of gravel required.

2. The volume of water to be placed on
the mix.
3. The density of the concrete.
4. The concrete mix proportion.
