Input and Output: They both matter in SLA

1st Slide topic title

Have you ever wondered what's in us that we can acquire a language so fast?

Surely, you have a lot of thoughts on your mind right now. I want to discuss with you the Input and output and
how both of them matter in Second language acquisition.

2nd slide picture 1

The early exposure we received to the target language is what we mean when we say input. It's similar to the
idea that you need to eat food to get full just like in acquiring a new language we learn it from the input we
feed in our minds from the daily activities we engage in, which is helpful for us to learn a new language. If
you look at the picture, reading books and listening to music are two methods for putting information into our
minds. This would imply that learning a language is impossible if you are unable to see and hear it.

I want you to think of a language that you have never heard or seen. As for me, I consider languages like
Dutch and Romanian as examples; then try speaking those languages now; you can't. It's not possible.

3rd Slide picture 2

Teachers keep an eye on the students in a classroom setting and work to make input simpler. They make an
effort to identify the best input that takes into account students' needs and interests and is, for the most part,
what Dr. Steven Krashen refers to as comprehensible input. Teachers look after their students to see that
they aren't just nodding along but actually comprehending what is being said.

4th slide picture/video

If the input is what goes in output is what comes out this can be through speaking and writing. According to
Merrill Swain (1985), input is not enough for language learning and there's a need for an output hypothesis to
produce the language. For an instance, given that you're Filipino and you often watch Korean vlogs and even
try apps like Duolingo to learn Hangeul, and with that, there's a need for you to exercise what you have learned
through writing basic Korean alphabets and try speaking Korean phrases to practice yourself.

5th slide topic title

With that being said Input and output are necessary for learning a second language or even a new language
you hope to learn since the input is helpful because, without it, there would be no output, and when there isn't
output, there hasn't been any input, so while we're learning a language, both are there and we should be
mindful of that. Thank you.
