CHAPTER I 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the background of the study, the statement of the

problem, the significance of the study, and the scope and delimitation of the study.

Background of the study

This research proposes an application that will solve the time-consuming process

of recording attendance. The Student's Attendance Scanner. The Attendance Scanner

application is used to automatically record the attendance of every student. The

Application can record the attendance of every students of Cainta Senior High School, it

is an application that will provide a reliable and efficient attendance monitoring in using

QR code for students’ time in and out and will manage the student regular attendance.

Recording attendance is a time-consuming process especially when classes are big and

in every subject, teachers will consume their time before starting.

The researchers provide this research so that the students of Cainta Senior High

School would have a proper and decent attendance record list. The Attendance Scanner

automatically records the student's attendance by just scanning their given personal QR

code. It is a well-known fact that almost all organizations, whether they are educational

or commercial, must accurately record the attendance of their students or employees in

order to plan, manage, and run the organization effectively. In most schools, the

traditional file method is typically used in developing countries to record students'

attendance. This method involves calling out the names of the pupils and using paper

sheets a very long period. The government experiences difficulty when often updating the

attendance records and manually calculating the proportion of classes that were both

absent and present for the purposes of the outcome, processing and examinations.

The researchers find that there are some problems in manually checking the

attendance that leads to create an application that will automatically check and record the

attendance of every student. According to Asri Nuhi (2020) student participation in the

classroom is directly related to their academic performance. Over the years, attendance

management has been conducted manually at most of the universities. To overcome the

manual attendance issues, we proposed and implemented a smart attendance system

with the aim to encourage the potential use of the Quick Response (QR) code as a future

attendance management system, to track and record student attendance in lectures and

exercises for all relevant courses. Having a human risk error, it creates a human risk

where the teacher or the assistant can check your name in the attendance record

incorrectly. One reason could be the need for an efficient and reliable method of tracking

student attendance. The manual process of checking attendance, such as calling out

names or using paper attendance sheets, can be time-consuming and prone to errors.

Implementing a scanner-based system may provide a more accurate and streamlined

process for tracking attendance. Another reason for the study could be to assess the

effectiveness of the attendance scanner system in improving student attendance rates by

collecting data on the students' attendance records before and after the implementation

of the scanner, the study can determine if the system has had a positive impact on

attendance.

The study may also be prompted by the desire to evaluate the level of acceptance

of the scanner system among the students. The system may require students to adjust

their behavior, such as ensuring they have their identification cards with them at all times,

and may impact their perception of privacy and surveillance. The study may seek to

understand how the students perceive these changes and their level of comfort with the

scanner system.

The solutions in the problems in processing the manual checking of attendance is

to make a program that will going to solve the problems in manually checking the

Attendance of Students in Cainta Senior High School. As said by Ardian Yasuf (2019)

supervisor finds it challenging when the schools should manually calculate the attendance

record updates and proportion of classes that were both absent and present for the

purpose of determining the outcome examinations and processing. In making the

Attendance Scanner Program the Cainta Senior High School will have a process of easier

way, less time consuming and upgraded version of checking the attendance of every

students. The system design project, Attendance Scanner system will be provide the

needed system program for faster and easier checking of attendance by giving a QR code

in every student for faster tracking their attendance. This will reduce the effort of the

teachers in checking the students’ attendance every now and then.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This chapter presents the review of related literature and studies, the model of the

study, and the definition of terms used in the study.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies that the researcher

considered in strengthening the importance of the present study. It also presents the

synthesis of the topic to fully understand the research for better comprehension of the

study.

Accounting for people is the first step of every manpower-based organization in

today’s world. This amount of expenditure for big organizations is near to nothing, rather

just a formality, it does not hold as much truth for small organizations such as schools,

colleges, and even universities to a certain degree. Various technologies like biometrics,

radio-frequency identification, Bluetooth, global positioning system, quick response code,

etc., have been used to tackle the issues of attendance collection. This study paves the

path for researchers by reviewing practical methods and technologies used for existing

attendance systems. (Gheisari, et al. 2022).

QR Code as attendance monitoring system was generally very highly acceptable

in terms of reliability, efficiency, accuracy, usability, while highly acceptable in terms of

security and confidentiality. The views of the participants imply that QR code as

attendance checker was environment-friendly, cost-effective, user-friendly, innovative,

very fast and readable. (Maleriado and Carreon, 2021).

Student participation in the classroom is directly related to their academic

performance. Over the years, attendance management has been conducted manually at

most of the universities. To overcome the manual attendance issues, we proposed and

implemented a smart attendance system with the aim to encourage the potential use of

the Quick Response (QR) code as a future attendance management system, to track and

record student attendance in lectures and exercises for all relevant courses. (Asri Nuhi,

et al. 2020).

This study primarily aimed to assess the efficacy of Scan Attendance Manager

Application using Quick Response Code as perceived by the teachers in Dagohoy

National High School, Dagohoy, Bohol, Philippines, School Year 2019-2020.The Scan

Attendance Manager is a reliable application wherein teachers could conveniently use to

monitor class attendance by simply scanning the QR code embedded to each student's

ID. As expected, this application provides efficient data output from detecting absent

students to generating reports; thus, it is advisable to use. Manager App as perceived by

the teachers. Among the five classifications, teachers have extensively perceived the

efficient output that Scan Attendance Manager could provide in terms of its general

function in monitoring class attendance. (J.Galgo, 2020).

The study was conducted to determine the features and acceptability of Quick

Response (QR) Code innovative platform as an attendance monitoring system. The

digital application was available and free on Android smartphones that can be exported

to Microsoft Excel, while the system doesn't require an internet connection and is ideal

for a big class. With the combined evaluations of the teachers-user and students, data

revealed that QR Code as attendance monitoring system was generally very highly

acceptable in terms of reliability, efficiency, accuracy, usability, while highly acceptable in

terms of security and confidentiality. The views of the participants imply that QR code as

attendance checker was environment-friendly, cost-effective, user-friendly, innovative,

very fast and readable. (J.R.Carreon, 2019).

According to (Ardian Yusuf Wicaksono, 2019),The supervisor finds it challenging

when the schools should manually calculate the attendance record updates and

proportion of classes that were both absent and present for the purpose of determining

the outcome examinations and processing.

Higher education institutions in Malaysia are now encouraged to explore the

potential use of Quick Response (QR) code and smartphone as a future attendance

management system to track and record the student's attendance to the class and tutorial.

In response, this study attempts to explain the design and implementation of a proposed

system developed using Google Drive, Google Form, Google Sheet, Notepad, and QR

Code Generator Add-ons in Google Sheet. Students were required to scan the unique

QR code assigned to them using their smartphone during or at the beginning of each

lecture in order to confirm their attendance. This affordable QR code-based attendance

system enables lecturers to speed up the process of taking attendance, especially in a

large classroom and would save them valuable teaching time. (Siti Nazleen Abdul Rabu,

2019). QR codes technology has widely been used in many industries, including but not

limited to, business, health, marketing and education according to (B.A. Talip, 2018). QR

code obtaining features of scanning and decoding barcodes are becoming a popular tool

in modern education. QR Code as attendance monitoring system was generally very

highly acceptable in terms of reliability.

In conclusion, the use of Quick Response (QR) codes as an attendance monitoring

system is becoming increasingly popular in educational institutions. The system offers

benefits such as reliability, efficiency, accuracy, usability, security, and cost-

effectiveness. Additionally, it is environmentally friendly and user-friendly. The use of QR

codes can help to automate attendance management, reduce errors, and save valuable

teaching time. This technology can be implemented in both large and small educational

institutions and can help to improve student attendance and academic performance.

CHAPTER III 14

RESEARCH DESIGN

This chapter presents the method of research used, the sources of data, data

gathering instruments, data gathering procedure, and the statistical treatment of data.

METHODS OF RESEARCH USED

This study utilized a quantitative method of research and used descriptive research

design. Descriptive research design is the most suitable to this study in collecting

necessary information in terms of reliability, efficiency, accuracy, and usability to prove

that the acceptability level of students’ attendance scanner was generally highly

acceptable. This research design is very helpful in this research since the researchers

were able to present the data in a more meaningful way, which allows simpler

interpretation of the data.

According to Shona McCombes, (2019) Descriptive research design aims to

systematically obtain information to describe a phenomenon, situation, or population.

More exactly, it helps to answer “what”, “when”, “where”, and how questions regarding

the research problem rather than “why”. A descriptive research design can use a wide

variety of research methods to investigate one or more variables.

Finally, in order to be able to evaluate and analyze the data collected, the

researchers used questionnaire. More specifically, google form to collect quantitative data

from the respondents.

SOURCES OF DATA 15

The researchers used survey questionnaire data collection using google form in

conducting research. According to (Cohen, 2013) A 'questionnaire' is the instrument for

collecting the primary data. 'Primary data' by extension is data that would not otherwise

exist if it were not for the research process and is collected through either questionnaires

or interviews. Questionnaire is by giving a questions via internet, test paper to a certain

respondents and answering the questions only by themselves.

The sources of data in this study is the teachers of Cainta Senior High school. The

respondents were chosen using simple-random sampling. The researchers chose 34

teaches in cainta senior high school based on pure chance. The researchers was able to

come up with the number of 34 teacher respondents in school.

The researchers used simple-random sampling technique. The researchers select

respondents from the population of Cainta senior high school by randomly selects a

subset of participants from a population. Simple-random sampling is a type of probability

sampling in which the researcher randomly selects a subset of participants from a

population. Each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected to be

the respondent.

The researchers used this sampling method to ensure that results obtained from

your sample should approximate what would have been obtained if the entire population

had been measured (Shadish et al. 2019). The simplest random sample allows all the

units in the population to have an equal chance of being selected.

DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENT 16

The questionnaire was adapted by the researcher from the Cainta Senior High

School using Google Form. The instrument was checked by the research adviser. This

was used as the main data gathering instruments. The questionnaire was composed of

two parts: Part I Profile distribution of respondents in terms of age and sex. Part II

acceptability level of students’ attendance scanner in terms of reliability, efficiency,

accuracy, and usability

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

Data gathering is the process of collecting information to answer research questions or

to solve particular problems.

Construct question: The first step in data gathering is to construct question. This

will help in determining the type of data that needs to be collected.

Validate Question: Once the question has been construct, it is important to validate

all questions.
