Experiment: 03
To develop understanding about the fatigue and S-N curve for
the given specimen.

Theory:
Definition:
Fatigue is the condition whereby a material cracks or fails as a result of
repeated (cyclic) stresses applied below the ultimate strength of the
material.
For finding the normal stress we use below formula
σ = FL32/πD3

Fatigue Ratio = fatigue limit /fatigue strength

Or
Fatigue Ratio = Fatigue limit / ultimate strength
Procedure:
 First we take aluminum specimen
 Then we find out the diameter of specimen
 The distance from center of specimen to the outer surface is
32mm
 Put the one end of specimen in the chuck of fatigue testing
machine while the other end into the load side.
 After that we applied the load.
 We noted the time it took for the fracture to occur from the
computer connected with the apparatus
 Note the data from software before and after the breaking of the
material.
 The whole operation is shown in figure.1

Conclusion:
From this experiment it is concluded that fatigue is a
material property which varies from material to material. Initially the
material starts breaking slowly and then breaks faster with increasing
cycling load.
