involving living systems and their environments.

Rationale

The course aims to show that we, humans, are but a part of nature, but our actions at the collective level
prove that we are conveniently forgetting this and acting as if the Earth is simply as late on which we can
carve whatever designs suit our fancy and our state of economy.

Concepts used to study living systems can also be used to bring home the need to act mindfully and
respectfully within one’s environment, whether this be the immediate internal environment (consisting of
one’s own cells and organs and internal ecosystems), immediate external environment (one’s local
environment), and the global environment. This intent looks at science education as a means towards better
citizenship and informed social action.

The Life Sciences have served as inspiration for diverse fields such as Mathematics, Economics, Business
and Management, Sociology, and the Arts. Knowledge of the concepts, tensions, and contradictions inherent

in the central themes of the biosciences can serve to cross-pollinate students’ disciplinal training leading to
new ways of thinking, doing, and creating.

 Module Content and Study Guide – prepared for each module and provides the details of the learning
outcomes of each topic, learning activities, study questions, and list of readings and references. Module
study guide questions and self-assessments are to be answered but not to be submitted. They are meant as
review and knowledge-enhancing materials to prepare you for the long exams, so please practice
answering them.
 Activity/assignment Guides – prepared for the activities/assignments that are part of the course
requirements; each guide presents the required tasks and expected outputs, procedure or instructions,

CLASS POLICIES

1. Instructor communication/consultation policy: I will respond to in-person inquiries within the class period
or in the faculty room within the consultation hours. Inquiries via email/chat/messenger, I will try to answer
within 24 hours, Monday to Friday. Day times are best; I generally respond once to online communications
on weekends or holidays, however, a 24-hour turn-around on responses is not guaranteed.

2. Course delivery: The course delivery will primarily be BLENDED (a mix of in-person classes and remote
asynchronous—asynchronous schedules will be announced a meeting before the said schedule). The course

materials, including open-source references will be made accessible in our Google Classroom, and you can
download the files whenever you can, according to your internet connectivity.
3. Class discussion/forum: Please post general questions in class or in the Google Classroom stream. Every
class member can join in the discussion in class or in the stream. No inappropriate topics, questions, and
comments please. Students are advised to access the Google Classroom at least once a week to check for new
announcements and materials. Always observe proper netiquette (refer to next section for the netiquettes) and

4. Time commitment and recommended skills: You are expected to spend at least the same amount of time
on this course as you would any traditional (full in-person) university course. That means that a course that
meets one hour per week has two hours of homework, hence you would be spending three hours per week on

5. Reference info: There is no required textbook for this class. Free and open-source readings and videos will
be shared in Google Classroom. For copyrighted materials, links for access are provided in the list of
references.
6. Exam/quiz policy: Three long exams are scheduled. The exams will primarily be true or false, multiple
choice, and answer as directed questions that require brief and concise answers. The coverage of the exam is
stipulated in the course coverage. Make-up exams will only be allowed IF AND ONLY IF you had a
legitimate medical or police emergency (must be documented with a physician's note, police report, etc.),
and/or there was a natural catastrophe (must be accompanied by a legitimate proof, i.e., weather bulletin,
news bulletin). For the quiz covering Module 4, the schedule is posted in the course coverage. There is no

7. Promptness in submission of outputs: Promptness in submission of course requirements are minimum
expectations. All course requirements should be submitted electronically in our Google Classroom. You can
submit the assigned activities at your convenience any time BEFORE the deadline. Specific instructions
about activities and assignments are laid out in the activity guides. If you have any issue with any of the
deadlines, please inform me right away in-person or through email or messenger so that this can be resolved.
Activities or assignments submitted one week later will still be accepted but with corresponding penalties.
