11, Living Systems: Concepts & Dynamics; First Semester, A.Y. 2023 - 2024
Rationale
The course aims to show that we, humans, are but a part of nature, but our actions at the collective level
prove that we are conveniently forgetting this and acting as if the Earth is simply as late on which we can
carve whatever designs suit our fancy and our state of economy.
Concepts used to study living systems can also be used to bring home the need to act mindfully and
respectfully within one’s environment, whether this be the immediate internal environment (consisting of
one’s own cells and organs and internal ecosystems), immediate external environment (one’s local
environment), and the global environment. This intent looks at science education as a means towards better
citizenship and informed social action.
The Life Sciences have served as inspiration for diverse fields such as Mathematics, Economics, Business
and Management, Sociology, and the Arts. Knowledge of the concepts, tensions, and contradictions inherent
