LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE VI

(Interactions in the Ecosystem)

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, pupils are expected to:
a. Identify the interactions of living things found in coral reefs and tropical rainforest.
b. Discuss and describe the interactions among living things in coral reefs and tropical rainforests
c. Recognize the importance of maintaining diversity of living things in the coral reefs and
tropical rainforest ecosystem

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

Materials: Picture of Coral Reefs and Rainforest, Pictures of Organisms found in the coral reefs and
tropical rainforest, video, Cartolina, crayons/ colored pencil, marker/pentel pen
Science Processes : Identifying and Differentiating
Science Concept: Ecosystem is composed of living things (biotic factors) and non-living things (abiotic
factors), as well as their interactions with each other. Coral reef ecosystems are underwater ecosystems
formed from the skeleton of tiny, marine invertebrates called corals. Tropical rainforests are the Earth’s
oldest living ecosystems, dominated by tall, evergreen trees.

Value Focus: Appreciate the role of living things in the ecosystem

III. PROCEDURE
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY LEARNER’S ACTIVITY
A. Preliminary activity

1. Daily Routine
a. Prayer
b. Opening Song/Energizer
c. Checking of Attendance
d. Greetings

2. Drill

Shown below are pictures of the new ecosystems you are going to
learn. Guess what ecosystems they are by arranging the jumbled
words that accompany them. You can challenge yourself to do this
activity within a maximum of 2 minutes.

Corals, fishes, trees, plants, animals

What do we have in the pictures?

What are the living organism present in the picture?

B. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES

1. Presentation

In this lesson you will learn about tropical rainforest, and coral
reefs and their components and how do they differ from one
another. (Teacher may have a video presentation before the
activity)

(Teacher Demonstration):
The teacher will set up a short film showing about the
interactions of living thing in the ecosystem.

Answers may vary from the learners (it

could be corals reefs or tropical
rainforest.)

Interactions among organisms and their

environments can be very complex
because an organism gets everything it

abiotic parts of its environment. For

soil. All organisms rely on the abiotic

survival.
2. Discussion

Guided Questions:

What is a coral reef ecosystem?

How do living things interact among each other in a coral reef

ecosystem?

What are some interactions in the coral reefs ecosystem?

What is a tropical rainforest?

How do living things interact among each other in a tropical

rainforest?

What are some interactions in the tropical rainforest ecosystem?

3. Group Activity

Group the learners into 4 and give the respective tasks for each
group. Choose a rapporteur to present your output. To this activity
in the maximum of 20mins.

Group 1 – The learners will make a jingle about the importance of

coral reefs or the tropical rainforest in the ecosystem.

Group 2 – The learners will make a poem about the ecosystem

(tropical rainforest and coral reefs).

Group 3 – The learners will act out as Mr. Forest and Ms. Coral
Reefs and introduce their components.
Group 4 – The learners will draw a food web in a Tropical
rainforest ecosystem and explain.

1. Analysis
Abiotic and non-abiotic components
Group 1 to Group 4
Nonliving components are very
 How is an ecosystem an example of a system? important. Air is nonliving. Air
contains oxygen which organisms need
to breath to live. Air also contains
carbon dioxide. Plants need carbon
dioxide to produce their food. The sun
is nonliving. Plants need the sun to
produce their food. Animals need the

 Are nonliving components of an ecosystem important? Organisms interact to meet their needs
for food to survive. Food is the energy
they need to survive.

Ecosystems must have both biotic and

abiotic components. There must be
enough producers to support the
consumers. we need all kinds of
consumers to balance each other out.

Species interactions within ecological

webs include four main types of two-

commensalism, competition, and
predation (which includes herbivory
and parasitism).
 Ecosystems are complex. What features must an ecosystem
have to be balanced?
herbivores, carnivores, omnivores,
decomposers

 Can you give the different kind of interactions between

coral reefs and tropical rainforest?

 What kind of consumers are needed in an ecosystem for

balance to occur?

B. POST-ACTIVITY

1. Generalization
- How living things depend on each other in different ways?
- Why is it important that the diversity of plants and animals
maintain the natural balance of organism in nature?

2. Application
(Seat work)

Describe the river or lake ecosystem nearest your place. What

is the importance of this ecosystem to you and the community?

3. Valuing

Can you give the importance of the interdependence of food on

living things in an ecosystem? (Coral Reefs and Tropical
Rainforest)
