INDUSTRY APPLICATIONS

COMMERCIAL & RETAIL

In commercial environments, office blocks are becoming larger and taller with every new development. In the
event of an emergency, this means more areas, and more people, to evacuate quickly and safely.

In multi-storey buildings, it’s vital to use voice alarm to control an evacuation in phases. Pre-recorded voice
messages are used to direct people to use the safest exit route from where they are in the building. Zones
or areas of the building can be manually selected for evacuation in a chosen order, to avoid congestion and
potential panic if too many people try to exit at the same time.

“ASL’s VIPEDIA and V2000 products are second to none; feature rich, superbly engineered and yet simple to operate and
maintain. I have been using and specifying ASL’s products since the early 2000’s, and it has been enjoyable to see ASL
grow into one of the market leaders in the public address and voice alarm industry.”
- Jeff Marsh, PAVA Services

In retail environments, voice alarm is the best way to provide shoppers with clear guidance on how to leave
the building safely in the event of an emergency.

For retailers, combining their public address and voice alarms systems means that coded messages to staff
can be broadcast alongside promotional announcements and music. In this way, staff can be alerted to a
potential security threat without alarming shoppers in
the building.

RAIL
ASL is established as a global leader in PAVA applications for rail. With successful installations at over 2000
stations to date, and products given special approval by national rail operators, our equipment can be relied
upon to keep passengers safe, informed and protected at all times.

“ “[London Victoria] has been the third project I have worked with ASL on implementation of [the Vipedia-based PA
system], all of which have been excellent successes.
Throughout the projects, the team of engineers and staff have been fully supportive or our sometimes very complex
deliverables. We are proud to acknowledge ASL as one of our trusted suppliers.”
- Jon Arrowsmith, Atkins Rail

With more and more people using railways and underground metro systems to get around every day, the
need for safety and control at stations becomes ever more important. Intelligent public address routing
enables a consistent stream of announcements with minimal additional effort by staff. In the event of an
emergency, voice alarm announcements direct passengers to evacuate the station calmly and by the safest
route, keeping panic at bay.

We design our rail solutions with the needs of passengers and operators in mind. Our amplification products
deliver top quality sound and intelligibility, adjusting continuously to changing levels of ambient noise. And
our induction loop systems cater to the needs of those who are hard of hearing.

together, ensuring perfect compatibility and a feature set tailored perfectly to the needs of modern railway
systems.

“ “We have been working together for 14 years and I must say it’s been one of the most enjoyable working
relationships of my career at Fone Alarm. The reliability of our rail PA systems and the outstanding service all
my staff receives from ASL’s support personnel is second to none.
ASL is supplier of choice for the vast majority of our customers, and I believe this is a reflection on both the
product and the service they provide.”
- John Hazell, Fone Alarm Installations Ltd

STADIA
Modern stadia can hold tens of thousands of people at one time. Safe and reliable public address and voice
alarm systems are essential to ensure the safety of such large numbers of people in these spaces.

ASL’s VIPEDIA-12 routing matrix is designed for both large and small stadium systems. It performs at
professional audio sound levels with supreme feedback. The VIPEDIA stadium solution ensures both quality
and reliability in sound, with a +20dB audio output for ultimate sound quality, active line array dispersion, the

having 10 extra Select buttons, and the MPS50 having 50.

PA zone selection is provided by the Select buttons or by using the rotary selector and graphic LCD display. There is also a
VU bar-graph which displays the microphone signal level.

The MPS range can be connected directly to either one or two ASL audio routers using analogue audio and a serial link.
There is also an RJ45 Ethernet IP interface with Power over Ethernet for connection to ASL IP PA/VA systems, and for use
with VIPA enabled PC workstations. All interconnecting cabling and the microphone capsule are continuously monitored.
As well as the main microphone gooseneck, there are 3.5mm jack plug connections for an auxiliary audio input, such as for
background music, and for connection of a microphone headset. A general purpose local contact input and output enables
use with PTT foot switches and external speak-now indicators.

The microphone, and all interconnect cables and the gooseneck microphone are replaceable to simplify maintenance.
The MPS microphone range can be used freestanding on a desk as standard, or can be permanently mounted with the
optional mounting bracket. This bracket gives options to mount the microphone flat on a wall, built onto consoles or fixed
on desks.

The MPS can be purchased with a fist microphone replacement for the standard gooseneck if required. This is particularly
useful if the microphone is console or wall mounted.

Inputs1 and 2 of the VIPEDIA-12 support All Call Hardware Bypass Operation. The operation of microphones on these
inputs continues in an all-call-only mode in the event of VIPEDIA-12 processor failure or if there is a fault in the DBB
connection between units. Hardware bypass operation is supported in DBB and AB system architectures and does not
operate over Base-IP or ASL Secure Loop.

OVERVIEW

The EMS01, EMS10, EMS20 and EMS50 Emergency Microphone Stations are EN54 compatible emergency microphones
which provide live and pre-recorded message broadcast. The EMS01 is an all call version, with no additional buttons, while
the EMS10 provides 10 button selection capability whilst the EMS20 provides 20 buttons. The EMS50 is formed from
an EMS20 together with an additional 30 button EMX30 expansion unit. All microphones also provide EN54 compliant
emergency functions and all EN54 mandatory indicators and controls.

The microphones are housed in a lockable wall-mounting box and feature a graphic LCD display together with indicators
for ‘Power’, ‘Voice Alarm’, ‘System Fault’, ‘Fault’ and ‘Speak Now’. The LCD display provides remote access to the list of active
faults in the PA/VA system, while the EN54 mandated control keys enable navigation through the fault list, and also provide
remote fault acceptance and clearance.

Multiple PA/VA system interfaces and can be connected directly to either one or two ASL audio routers, enabling multiple
options for system redundancy. If configured, the microphone will operate in an All-Call hardware bypass fallback
mode in the event of processor failure within the host Voice Alarm Router. There is also a non-EN54 RJ45 Ethernet IP
interface with Power over Ethernet capability for VoIP connections to ASL IP based PA/VA systems. All interconnect cabling
and the microphone capsule are continuously monitored for open and short circuits.

The optional EMX30 expansion module allows up to 30 additional buttons to be connected to the main EMS unit. The EMS
base unit with EMX30 can be ordered as the EMS50 Top, bottom and rear cable entry points are provided by means of
‘knock-outs’ in the enclosure, while the field connections are provided by means of a set of terminals on the inside rear
panel of the back box. The EMS10, EMS20 and EMS50 are compatible with the whole range of ASL Voice Alarm and Public
Address systems, and are designed to comply with EN54-16, ISO 7240-16 and BS5839-8.
