HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF BADMINTON
-Badminton is a racket sport game by either 2 opposing players or 2 pairs.
-Since 1992, badminton has been an OLYMPIC sport with 5 elements;

 JAPAN - Hanetsuki (early 16th century)


 WEST - Battledore and Shuttlecock (2 or more players keep a
feathered shuttlecock in the air with small rackets)
 INDIA - Poona (18th century, British army officers stationed there and
brought it to ENGLAND in 1860’s played by upperclassmen for
amusement)
 ISAAC SPRATT - London toy dealer published a booklet
“Badminton Battledore - a new game”
 THE GAME OF BADMINTON (1873) - new sport was launched at
the BADMINTON HOUSE, CLOUCESTESHIRE owned by DUKE
OF BEAUFORT
 BATH BADMINTON CLUB (1887) - standardized the rules and
made it applicable to English ideas
 Basic regulations were drawn in 1887
 BADMINTON ASSOCIATION OF ENGLAND (1893) - published
first set of rules and regulations and launched badminton at DUNBAR
at 6 WAVERLEY GROVE, PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND on SEPT.
13, 1893
 Started All England Open Badminton Championship (first badminton
competition in the world 1899)
 THE INTERNATION BADMINTON FEDERATION (IBF) -
established in 1934 with Canada, Denmark, England, France,
Netherlands, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales with its
founding members. India joined as affiliate in 1936
MILESTONES OF PHILIPPINE BADMINTON

 1950 the Philippines became the 21st member of IBF


 1952 Philippine Badminton Association (PBA) organized 28
badminton clubs (first national badminton group)
 1962 Johnny Yan & Stephen Cheng the first doubles champions in
Hong Kong
 1966 first team championship in men’s division of the 1966
Triangular Meet in Vietnam
 1981 participated in Southeast Asian (SEA) games
 1984 first appearance in Thomas Cup Competitions
 1992 Melvin Llanes 1st PH champion at Prince Asia Juniors
Championship for 16 under age
 1995 Australian International Championship, Weena Lim and Keenie
Asuncion the 1st entry (ladies doubles) to win a gold
 1996 Weena Lim 1st PH badminton player to qualify and participated
in Olympic games (1996 Atlanta Olympics Games)
 1997 SEA games in Jakarta, Weena and Keenie 1st bronze medalist
women’s doubles
 2001 Bangkok, Kennevic Asuncion became 1st bronze medalist
(men’s singles) with his sister Kennie in the mixed doubles
 2002 13th World Championship (Birmingham England) the Asuncion
siblings were the 1st PH players to qualify in both men’s singles and
mixed doubles
 PBA is recognized as the National Sports Association (NSA) for
badminton in the PH. Also a regular member of the PH Olympic
Committee
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENTS

1. NET (Mesh Net) - placed lower than a vb net at 5ft and 1inch high on
the sides and 5ft high in the center.
 SINGLES - 17ft (width) 44 (length)
 DOUBLES - 22 ft (width) 44 (length)
 30 inches wide
 WHITE TAPE - 3inch
2. POST - 5ft and 1inch height from the floor
3. SHUTTLECOCK (Shuttle/Birdie)
 HARD CORK - hardest and heaviest part
 FEATHERS - 16 feathers (2.44 and 2.75 inches)
4. RACKET - made up of carbon fiber and lighter materials (aluminum).

 HEAD - bounds the stringed area
 STRINGED AREA (HITTING SURFACE) - intended the player hits
the shuttle
 SHAFT - connects the handle to the head
 THROAT - connects shaft to head
 HANDLE - gripped by the player
5. COURT - 44feet long by 22ft wide (doubles), 17feet wide (singles).
 BACKCOURT - back 3rd of the court
 CENTER POSITION (Base Position) - central area of the court where
the players return
 FORE COURT - front 3rd of the court, bet. The net and short-service
line
 MID-COURT - middle 3rd of the court

TERMINOLOGIES
 BIRD/BIRDIE - other term for shuttlecock
 CLEAR - shot hit deep in the back of the opponent’s court
 CROSS-COURT - shot hit diagonally over the net, from one side to
another
 DOUBLE HIT - hitting the shuttlecock twice (a fault)
 DROP SHOT - soft shot with touch, shuttlecock falls close to the net
on the opponent’s side
 DRIVE - powerful shot placed over the top of the new
 FAULT - violation/infraction of the rules
 FRICK - quick movement of the wrist and forearm that changes a soft
shit into a harder one’ mostly used when serving or close to the net
 KILL - hard, downward shot that is not returnable
 LET - call by the umpire to restart point. Occurs when the server
serves before the receiver is ready, the shuttle disintegrates during the
play an accidental distraction occurs
 PUSH SHOT - soft shot executed by pushing the shuttle with small
wrist movement
 RALLY - exchange of shots following the serve
 SMASH - hard, powerful overhead shot sending the shuttlecock down
