CHAPTER 1
Introduction
As time passed, the games evolved based on how the technology
changed, like how it became more modern and clearer. Before, you couldn't
really see the games properly; it was more blurry than clear. It was also not
that accessible because it was expensive back then, but now it's more
accessible and easier to play, so even a 4-year-old kid can also play, so a lot
of people get addicted to it because online games, which have always been
entertaining to play, especially if someone wants to kill time, became people's
best friend as a method to pass the time while they were feeling bored. Due to
the happiness it brings, many people, especially high school students, enjoy
spending their free time playing online games, particularly mobile games.
Before we talk about the effects of ML on the students, let's talk about what
ML really is and how it can be used. Mobile Legends is a multiplayer online
battle arena (MOBA) for iOS and Android devices developed and published
by Shanghai Moonton Technology, a game development company based in
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The game was launched in 2016, and it is a game
where two teams of five players compete against one another with the main
goal of destroying the opposing team's base. Each player chooses a hero at
the beginning of the game. Every hero has a special set of qualities and
abilities. There are presently 92 heroes in the game, divided into six main
classes: tank, fighter, assassin, marksman, support, and mage. These
positions define the obligations of players for their respective teams. For
instance, support characters can heal or boost their teammates. To keep
themselves alive or powerful during combat, they should stick with their
comrades. In order to level up their heroes, players must destroy enemy
forces, particularly computer-controlled minions, turrets, and heroes. They can
buy things that raise the stats of their heroes with the money they earn from
doing this in-game. Mobile Legends games often last 10 to 15 minutes, as
opposed to MOBA PC games like Dota 2 and League of Legends, which may
last anywhere between 40 and an hour (Rappler, November 24, 2019).

and other duties. It is essential to emphasize that individual susceptibility,
playing duration, and daily choices can all have an impact on how mobile
games affect a person's health and behavior. Hence, this research was
conducted to the Effects of Online Games: Mobile Legends in Grade 10
Peace Students at Arandia College to their Behavioral Performance.
The study aimed to determine The Effects of Online Games: Mobile Legends
in Grade 10 Peace Students at Arandia College in Their Behavioral
Performance. Specifically, the researchers sought answers to the following
question:
DEFINITION OF TERMS
The following terms are hereby operationally and conceptually defined for a
better understanding of this research.
Anxiety. It can lead to an increase in both breathing and heart rate, as well as
a redirection of blood flow towards the brain to enhance cognitive function.
IOS. It stands for iPhone operating system and is designed for use with
Apple's multitouch devices.

supernatural.

RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This chapter presents foreign as well as local literature and studies which
served as bases or frames of reference in the conduct of the study
summarized below are some of the articles and studies which the researcher
found useful and relevant to the study.
INTERNATIONAL LITERATURE
According to another study by Adachi and Willoughby (2013), a negative
correlation between video game use and academic performance among high
school students, where higher use of video games was associated with lower
grades. Similarly, a study by Son and Lee (2019) found a significant negative
relationship between smartphone addiction and academic performance
among university students. Overall, these studies suggest that excessive use
of video games and technology, including Mobile Legends, may have a
negative impact on academic performance. It is important for individuals to
maintain a healthy balance between leisure activities and academic
responsibilities.

store that is also hot seat as an entertainment in Android. This game is said to
be a free mobile MMO strategy video game which was developed and
published by Moontoon. Through this game, the players are planning on how
to destroy the enemies tower and on how they can defeat the enemy. This is
also a strategic game because it includes battles with the opponent online
player. It means that this App can be downloaded free on your mobile phone
also it is a hot seat as an entertainment in Android. This is a strategic game
where the players will think about what the best utilizes on their facilities to
plan, to defend and to destroy the opponent team. Based on Rimington,
Elzabi,and etc. Mobile Legend is the largest online game in the world but is
under-represented in video game studies. Its community is large and multi-
sited but known for competitive and toxic behaviors (According to Koueider).
LOCAL LITERATURE
According to Arjay Aragon (2017), it is undeniable that many individuals enjoy
playing online games alone or with their peers, and a strategy-based Multi-
player Online Battle Arena game such as MLBB can be highly addictive,
keeping players engaged for hours. This genre of gaming originated on PC
and allows gamers to test their abilities against actual players while assessing
their reaction time, critical thinking, and winning strategies. Additionally, it also
measures an individual's sportsmanship, which is an essential trait of a
genuine gamer.
Mobile Legends is a highly popular online game among young boys and
adults in the Philippines and is played on both mobile phones and personal
computers. The game involves two opposing teams fighting to destroy each
other's bases while defending their own, with weaker computer-controlled
characters called "minions" helping them in their quest. The game has five
players controlling different hero characters, each with their own unique roles
and abilities. While the game promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, and
friendship among players, it also has several negative effects such as
addiction, distraction, and procrastination, which can affect academic
performance, health, and communication skills. Some students have become
so addicted to the game that they neglect their studies, leading to low grades
and poor academic performance. Additionally, some players have been
reported to use foul language during gameplay, which can negatively impact
communication skills. Parents should be aware of both the positive and
negative aspects of the game before allowing their children to play it
(Renester P. Suralta 2021).
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) made an exciting entrance into the
Philippine basketball scene in 2018 by collaborating with popular Filipino
basketball players, releasing basketball-themed skins and limited-edition
jerseys, and organizing offline activities. The game has always placed
importance on local culture and aims to connect with players on a deeper
level. Since basketball is a popular sport in the Philippines and among MLBB

players, it was a natural decision to enter the basketball scene. MLBB's Vice
President, Cherry Xia, stated that basketball and e-sports share similarities in
emphasizing competition and teamwork, allowing players of all skill levels to
experience the thrill of both (PinoyTechSaga 2018).

Conclusions
The results of the research conducted led the researchers to conclude that:
1.The advantages of playing Mobile Legends are that it makes the students
break free from this stressful world because it gives them happiness and
helps them forget things that make them sad or stressed, and it also helps
them to think more critically, solve problems, and improve their strategic
planning, which helps them accomplish their academic tasks that require
logical reasoning and analytical thinking. The disadvantages of playing it are
that it makes them leave an attitude to the people around them when they are
disturbed while playing it, and it makes them forget their responsibilities in life
because of how much focus they need to win one game.
2. The impact of playing the online game Mobile Legends on the behavioral
performance of Arandia College's Grade 10 peace students' findings suggest
an association between playing Mobile Legends and certain behavioral
changes in the participants. Participants who spent more time playing the
game had lower grades and less concentration on their schoolwork. This
suggests that excessive gaming can divert students' attention away from
academic responsibilities and impede their overall educational progress.
Educational institutions should consider implementing strategies to raise
awareness about the potential negative effects of excessive gaming, promote
responsible gaming habits, and encourage a healthy balance of academics,
social interactions, physical activity, and recreational pursuits. By addressing
these concerns, educational institutions can help students develop in a
positive and complete manner.
Recommendations
2. Parents have a vital role to play in educating their children about effective
time management to prevent excessive gaming. A helpful method involves
supporting them in creating a timetable that allows for the thoughtful
organization and prioritization of their activities throughout the upcoming
week. It is important for students to be aware that they often underestimate
the time required for tasks. To improve their ability to estimate accurately,
they can draw on their previous encounters with similar tasks and recall the
time it took to complete them.

3. Parents could contemplate prohibiting their children from gaming in their
individual rooms and instead designating a shared space exclusively for
gaming activities. This arrangement enables enhanced supervision of gaming
habits and creates an environment that encourages family interaction and
participation in gaming together. By centralizing games in a communal area,
parents can more effectively monitor their children's gaming activities and
actively promote engagement among family members. This method fosters a
sense of unity and creates valuable opportunities for bonding and
strengthening family relationships.
