BAC KGR OUND : SUSTAI NABI L ITY
I NNOVATI ON I N TEXTI L E I ND USTRY

• Textile Industry which is one of the Global industries Provides the

basic need of human “Clothes”,which is Second most important need
Of human life After water and food .
• Along with the positive contributions textile industry also have
negative impacts on society and environment when it comes to long
term Sustainability.
• Some issues arising from textile industry may include :
product design, treatment of associated pollutants,
encountered barriers, corporate social responsibility.
• Hence there is the Sustainability issue that has to be corrected by
Sustainability Innovations.
TEXTILE INDUSTRY AND ITS
IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT

• Textile Industry is estimated to be responsible for about 20% of global

clean water pollution from dying and finishing products.
• It causes air pollution mainly during dying and printing process. It
causes Steam generation and steam contains carbon, carbon dioxide,
carbon monoxide, and sulphur which are very harmful.
• A huge amount of water waste is generated which contain Nylon
(,release nitrous oxide),which is non-biodegradable and non eco-
friendly causes landfills.
RESULTS
HOW TO TREAT THIS?

This can be treated by following ways:

• Eco-design
• Ecol labelling
• Cleaner production
• Life-cycle assessment
• Look for recycling textile creation option
• Develop fabric that shed less
• Buying second hand clothes and Reusing can help avoiding landfills.
ECO-DESIGN

• Eco-design is the systematic effort to Integrate enviournmental

consideration and product and process development.
• A more comprehensive approach because it looks at the entire
supply chain ,not only recycling.
• The popular tools used in eco-design in textile industry are :
Eco-label, Carbon footprint,Life cycle analysis, Design for
Sustainability etc.
• The most popular raw materials for eco design are
cardboard,bamboo and recycled metal.
LIFE –CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA)

• LCA is a methodology for identifying critical points in

industrial process as well as opportunities for
improving various technological solutions in order to
achieve and promote environmental innovation and
efficiency.
• LCA has been used in Self-cleaning textiles and also a
new finding is a “machine –washable fabric which is
very cost-effective and can meet market demand.
ECO-LABEL

• An Eco-label is a certification seal given to an

enviournmental friendly product that meets the criteria
established by the Eco-label awarding authority.
• Eco-label in textile industry promote eco-friendly practices
such as sustainable production and reduction of harmful
chemicals in textile.
• For the textile industry among the popular Ecolabels are Blue
sign standards .
• Example: BMP Certified cotton originating from
Australia, which grows cotton that is environmental friendly.
MATERIAL

• The material theme refers to efforts To reduce, replace or Use more

sustainable material as part of Sustainability Innovation.
• For example: An innovative effort is being made to Develop regenerate
cellulose filaments from a paper mill sludge-based material dissolved in an
ionic liquid .
PACKAGING

• “It can be defined as a Process of designing pakage/cover for the consumer

product to differentiate the product to that of competitors and helps to
identify the products .”
• In Packaging harmful material ie. Plastic can be used which is non-
biodegradable so the case study says to minimize the use of packaging,or
minimize use of harmful packaging or reusing garment packaging .
• Pakaging in textile industry is of great importance as it the first impulse for
the customer to buy, hence ways needed to be find how to make less harmful
packages i.e bioplastic.
PROCESS INNOVATION

There are several practices related to process innovation Including

• cleaner production,
• Eco efficiency
• Waste handling
• Enzyme based textile processing etc
CLEANER PRODUCTION

• Cleaner production reflects an integrative Preventive environmental

business strategy aimed at increasing overall business efficiency, and
lowering risks to people and environment while producing quality
products .
• It improves our operative, economic and environmental performance
as well as useful in communication with stakeholders Aand gaining long
term profit .
• For example: using biomass pigments In dyeing process Based on bio
conversion or finishing process by nano technology.
ECO EFFICIENCY

• Eco efficiency is an organization ability to provide Competivly priced goods

and services while minimizing enviournmental effect And resources used
throughout their life cycle.
• It is basically “creating more value with less enviournmental effect”.
RISK MANAGEMENT

• Risk management is an inseparable part of innovation Because

product and process development are Inextricably Linked to the
Potential side effects and risks.
• These risks maybe ecological risk, health risk, economic risk,
technical risk etc.
• Financing risks and benefits can be moderated by market strategies
but risk related to health, safety, environment And Sustainability are
hard to assess by conventional analysis methods.
INNOVATION IN TEXTILE
INDUSTRY

• Hence in past many years innovation has been done in textile industry using
• Eco-design, Ecolabels, material, packaging, life cycle analysis, Etc.
• The products produced must be safer,Have more efficient sale prices,be
healthier, enviournmental friendly and used less energy And less waste .And all
these innovations are tried to bring in textile industry.
CONCLUSION

• The aim of this case study was to Use a systematic review approach related to
sustainable innovation in textile industry.
• The methods used were Eco design,Eco label, life cycle
assessment, material, packaging, risk assessment , cleaner production etc.
• In all these methods we were concerned about how to produce our product
that it has least environmental impact and is more economical to use.
• The barriers to practice product Sustainability Innovation in textile industry
such as cost ,lack of knowledge, lack of government support, macro economic
risks, are tried to be overcomed.
• Hence both internal and external factors drive to produce products that are
sustainably innovative.
