OBJECTIVES: Students will be able to…
1. determine the meaning of the words.
2. validate ideas after listening to a poem.

A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY
1. MOTIVATION:
a. Show a photo of the planet Earth and ask the question: “Imagine that the
planet we live in is dying. If it does, can we go to another planet?” show 2
contrasting pictures of a dirty place and one with clean surroundings. Ask
the class where they prefer to live in.

B. DEVELOPMENT OF THE LESSON

1. Introduce the poem, “Our Earth, Our Home” to the class. After reciting it, ask
some volunteers to remove the trash surrounding the globe one-by-one. Once
the globe is rid of the trash, ask the class if this is one world they would like to live
in.
2. Have the class answer Word Attack on p. 101 by reading the first word in the
sequence and asking them to check the picture that rhymes with it. (Formative 1).
3. Have the students watch a video about supplying rhyming words.

C. ASSESSMENT
1. To better gauge the class’s understanding of the poem, have them answer Think
Alongs Exercises A and B on p. 102. (Formative 2)
