Overview In this unit, you will learn the Gregg Shorthand Alphabet, the stroke symbols
and sound of the letters or words.
The speed with which you learn to read and write Gregg Shorthand will depend
largely on two factors; the time you devote to practice and the way in which you
practice.
The alphabet of Gregg Shorthand, each letter represents a certain sound.
In shorthand writing, you simply jot down only whatever sounds that you hear
in words and ignore all the silent letters unheard in speech.
Brief forms, the most common words have abbreviated shorthand spelling. The
brief forms in this lesson are all written with single shorthand symbols.

Learning At the end of this unit students can:

Outcome 1. Define what Gregg Shorthand is, identify and write the alphabet of Gregg
Shorthand correctly.
2. Enumerate the punctuation, paragraph, and capitalization symbols.
3. Discuss the proper execution of words, and minor vowels omitted words.
4. Identify the abbreviated words called brief forms, short and soft vowel
sounds.

Pre- Practice Drill:

assessment Write the Alphabet of Gregg Shorthand, Consonant written forward, written
downward and vowels in a shorthand stroke in your Steno Notebooks.

Gregg Shorthand is one of the most valuable subjects you hy.net/
will ever learn. There are several reasons why such a powerful anunit01.shtm
statement is true. l
Shorthand is a lifelong personal skill which relieves one from Gregg
drudgery of writing longhand. Shorthand makes it possible for Shorthand
most people to write three of four times faster than their College book 1
longhand writing speed. Over a lifetime this saves a Zoubek-
tremendous amount of time. Condon

What is Gregg Shorthand?

- is a form of shorthand that was invented by John Robert

Gregg in 1888. Like cursive longhand, it is completely based on
elliptical figures and lines that bisect them.
- Shorthand is written by sound; thus aim is written am (long
sound of a), cat is written kat, knee is written ne. Since we are
learning shorthand to save time in writing, it is necessary to
ignore those letters that aren't pronounced.
- is an abbreviated symbolic writing method that increases
speed and brevity of writing as compared to longhand, a more
common method of writing a language.

Salutation such as sentences beginning with a proper noun
will contain capitalization marks. However, when a letter
begins with a salutation such as Dr. Mr., Dear Ms., the proper
noun will not contain capitalization marks. When the notes are
transcribed, the names will be capitalized.

Lesson 4: Abbreviated words called Brief Forms

Objectives:
1. Memorize and understand the stroke and symbols of brief
forms.
2. Identify and memorize the continuation of the combination
of stroke and proper execution of words.

There are some words in the English language that occur

again and again when we speak or write. As an aid to rapid
writing, special abbreviations, called brief forms, are provided
for some of these common words.
This process of abbreviation is common in longhand. For
example, we abbreviate Street to St.: Mister to Mr.; Saturday to
Sat. Because the word for which brief forms have been
provided occur so frequently be sure you learn them well.

Gregg Shorthand College Book 1, Zoubec-Condon

Key Shorthand’s emphasis on the briefest possible forms is a big influence; the
Concepts/ shorthand writer is always aware of the line of least resistance. Of course,
Focus shorthand is not designed for people who have a choice in what they are writing;
Points it was intended almost explicitly for people rapid taking dictation of other
people’s words in well-defined contexts like the courtroom. But as someone in a
different position entirely, I find myself thinking not in words and sentences as I
would in longhand, but instead trying to translate the sense in my head into the
words which are easiest to write and best drilled into your memory.

Post- At the end of this Unit I the student can memorize the Gregg shorthand alphabet
assessment and write the proper stroke and symbols, easy to identify every letter, can read
and and write the stroke.
Feedback At this unit we have a long quiz about the lesson contain in this module to
identify the student progress.
