• Star Diagnosis equipment
• Two #2 connectors (220 589 00 99 02) from the MB connector
set
• Resistance substitution box, #124 589 09 63 00

Reference materials:

• Occupant Safety System (SRS) for Mercedes-Benz self-study booklet

Instructions:
1. Follow the instructions and answer the questions.
2. Ask your instructor if assistance is needed.
3. Stop at instructor checkpoints for sign-off.

Identifying and locating components

1. Which model / model year are you using for this module? Model ___________
Model year 20_____
How many airbags does it have? ___________

2. Is there an airbag replacement date sticker on the vehicle? Yes / No

If you answered yes, what date is shown? ____________________
3. How many ETRs are found on this vehicle? (Check in WIS group 91.60, Basic
Knowledge for this and the next question) ______
4. Where are the side bag sensors located on this vehicle?
____________________________________________________________

Function Checking of SRS using the MIL

1. Locate WIS document number GF91.60-P-4011-01GC.

This document explains the operation of the SRS Malfunction Indicator Lamp
(MIL) on various models. Note: on some vehicles, though, you’ll need to start
the engine before the MIL will go out. Check that the MIL goes out after starting
your vehicle. OK? ______

2. With no faults present in the system, the MIL should go out after ______
seconds.
3. Locate WIS document number GF91.60-P-2003GH. According to this
document, what does a flashing SRS MIL indicate?
____________________________________________________________

4. Locate WIS document number GF91.60-P-4008-03GH. For child seat

recognition to occur, how many transponders are located in the child seat
and where? __________________________________________________

5. The ‘airbag off’ light will illuminate when a properly equipped child seat is
installed, as long as the seat is correctly ______________and ____________.

Creating a Fault in the Vehicle

1. With ignition OFF, unplug a connector under the front passenger seat cushion
as follows:
a) C and G Class: Access to the plug is from the front. There are two
yellow plugs, unplug the connector on the outer side of the seat.
b) S Class: Access to the plug is from the rear. There are two yellow plugs,
unplug the left hand one.
2. Start the engine. What did the SRS MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) do?
______________________________________________
3. Switch ignition OFF.
4. Attach diagnostic equipment (SDS) and enter the DAS program for AB-Airbag.
5. Record any DTC’s (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) _______________________
6. The letter/number designation for this component is ____________
7. Press F3 once or twice to get to a list of tests.
8. Highlight the recommended test called “Check component…” and press F3.
9. Check to see if you can get the highlighted actual value to change and answer
the question appropriately. (Note that the control module receives the value
“CONNECTED” when the connector is disconnected. Why do you think this is
so?) Proceed as directed, to “Select further tests”.
10. Highlight the next test on the list of tests, and press F3.
11. According to the “Specification value”. Answer the following:
Belt tongue inserted _______________ Ω
Belt tongue not inserted ____________Ω
12. Press F1 and return to the list of possible tests again.

TECH 507 Mod 4.1 SRS (GC) 08-28-02 3

13. Highlight the test you did in step 8 above and press F3.
14a. For G and C Class: Using the MB connector kit, attach the resistance
simulation unit (Dekade box) at the sockets of the plug you disconnected.
Set the ohm value first to the value you recorded for belt tongue inserted from
step 11. What is the ”Status of relevant actual value?” ___________________

Set the ohm value now to the value you recorded for belt tongue not inserted
from step 11. Did the ”Status of relevant actual value” change? Yes / No
________
14b. For S Class: Press F6. Locate the AB schematic and describe how
information from S68/4 gets to N2/7. _____________________________

15. Switch ignition OFF and reconnect the plug under the front passenger seat.

16. To summarize:
a) A defective buckle switch causes the control module to record a code.
b) A defective buckle switch will not provide the correct ohm values with
seat belt tongue inserted and not inserted.
c) When the proper resistance is used to simulate a good buckle switch,
but the control module doesn’t recognize the signal, then the defective
component is the: ______________________________________

Checking an Actual value

1. From the AB-Airbag menu, highlight “Actual values” and press F3.
2. Highlight the choice “Seat occupied and child seat recognition” and press F3.
3. Experiment to check how much pressure is required for B48 to change the seat
occupied actual value from “NOT ASSIGNED” to “ASSIGNED”.
Does it matter where the pressure is applied? __________________

TECH 507 Mod 4.1 SRS (GC) 08-28-02 4

4. When pressure is removed, the actual value does not change back immediately.
How long does it take for the actual value to change? _____________________
Why do you think there is a delay in the actual value changing?
________________________________________________________________
(If you had a child seat, this would be a good time to verify that AB will recognize
one that is properly installed on the front passenger seat.)

Control Module Coding-Vehicle Equipment

1. From the AB-Airbag actual values menu, highlight “Ignition circuits” and
press F3.
2. How many airbags are shown as installed in this vehicle? _________________
3. How many ETRs are shown as installed in this vehicle? __________________

Returning the vehicle to normal, operating condition

1. Perform a short test on your vehicle, erase all DTCs and then repeat the short
test to insure there aren’t any permanent faults.
Show your instructor the results of your short test.

Understanding the W220 Block Diagram in WIS

1. At the Infobox 1 screen of WIS, type gf9160p000203s in the “Document no.”

box: Press Enter.

In this diagram, inputs to AB are shown on the left and outputs on the right.
What control module informs the AB system about seat belt usage on the right
front seat?

2. Are rear seat belt buckle switches used? Yes / No

3. Could the rear ETRs deploy even if the rear belts were unbuckled? Yes / No

4. In the event of a crash, what type of signal is transmitted from the AB control
module to N3/10? __________________________________
Why is this signal transmitted? __________________________________

Reviewing Self-Study booklet information:

1. Why is there an electrical connection between SRS and TeleAid?

________________________________________
2. How many deployment stages are there for a Wankel-type ETR? ____________
3. Besides size and location, what is the biggest difference between the
windowbag and all other airbags? __________________________________
