Assignment 1”, Deadline: Jan 26, 11:59 PM

Q1. A long and narrow plate (t=12 mm) with a shoulder is fixed at one end. A hole is to be
drilled at location A on the plate (see the figure below). The bit diameters available are 9 mm, 15
mm, 21 mm and 27 mm. The plate is being subjected to load P at the other end.

[a]. Determine the diameter 𝑑𝑏 of the largest bit that can be used if the load allowable at the hole

is not to exceed that at the shoulder fillets,

[b]. If the allowable stress in the plate is 145 MPa, what is the corresponding allowable load P?
Q2. 150 mm diameter steel shaft is to have a press fit with a 300 mm outer diameter by 250 mm
hub length of cast iron. The maximum tangential stress is to be 35 MPa. The steel and cast iron
material properties are; E(steel) = 200 GPa, υ(steel)=0.3, E(cast iron) = 100 GPa, υ(cast
iron)=0.3, and coefficient of friction between the shaft and hub is 0.12.

[a]. Determine the maximum diametral interference

[b]. What axial force would be required to press the hub on the shaft?

[c]. What torque may be transmitted with this fit?

Q3. Cast iron hydraulic cylinder with closed ends is subjected to an internal pressure of 15 MPa.
The inner and outer diameters of the cylinder are 200 mm and 240 mm respectively. The yield
strength of cylinder material is 300 MPa. Determine the factor of safety for the chosen design
parameters by considering cylinder as (i) thick-walled and (ii) thin-walled and compare the results.
