2.5 Pile Testing & Instrumentation

The testing and quality control of piles at construction and post construction stages has become a
common practice in most of the projects. ACES delivers quality services with a focus on safety,
value, innovation and excellence. Our comprehensive pile
testing services includes:

 Caliper Logging
Caliper log determines the shape and size variations
of the drilled pile borehole to assess zones of likely
collapse, necking or bulging prior to concreting of
the shaft.

Withdrawn
 Ultrasonic Crosshole Logging
An important very common test to investigate the quality of the shaft concrete and locate
defective zones within the pile shaft.

 Static Load Test (Vertical, Uplift & Lateral)

Pile Load Test (PLT) is most reliable tests to ascertain pile load capacity and behavior. ACES pro-
vides full monitoring of PLT with displacement transducers, dial gauges and load cells including
pile shaft instrumentation, in addition to inclinometers for laterally loaded piles tests.

Facilities
Pile Testing & Instrumentation (Cont’d...)

 Low Strain Integrity Test

This is a fundamental test conducted on almost all
constructed piles to investigate pile shaft integrity
and detect defects such as necking and cracking of
the pile shaft, in addition to checking the pile length.

 High Strain Dynamic Test

This important test determines the pile carrying
capacity and settlement properties. The facility
enables real-time analysis of the pile data, which
can highlight any pile problems while the piling rig

 Shrinkage Monitoring
This instrumentation using Vibrating Wire Strain Gauges
(Embedment type) is carried out to monitor strain in the
concrete structure due to shrinkage. Shrinkage after
hardening of concrete is the decrease with time of concrete
volume.

Withdrawn
Temperature Monitoring of Mass Concrete (Thermocouple Sensors)
Temperature monitoring is carried out during the execution of mass concrete structures of
which the character of concrete is technically specified as a structure with large dimensions
and has the tendency to rise its temperature due to many factors such as mix design and
progress of heat of hydration.

 Estimated Concrete Strength by the Maturity Method

The maturity method is a technique that can be used to
estimate the strength of in-placed concrete in terms of the
temperature - Time factor.

2.7 Special Studies Services & Facilities
ACES have developed good reputation in solving “Construction Problems”. Accordingly, ACES
established a special studies & project department to handle a wide range of projects with an
open-ended scope. ACES employs highly qualified specialists in highways, structural and
geotechnical engineering for this purpose. Also, state of the art equipment for destructive and
non-destructive testing are utilized by ACES. All available equipment are calibrated and in
accordance with the International Standards such as BS, EN, ASTM, DIN, AASHTO, CIRIA etc.

ACES have conducted this specialized work in several countries in the Arab World and in Asia.

The scope of services of the special studies and projects department are:

 Evaluation of condition and damage of existing structures.

 Evaluation of fire damaged structures and design of repair.
 Non-destructive testing of reinforced concrete to determine diameter, spacing and
direction of reinforcing steel.
 Non-destructive testing of reinforced concrete to evaluate the internal condition of
concrete , voids , honeycombing and delamination.
 Evaluation and determination of actual concrete compressive strength.
 Durability Tests for evaluation of old structures .
 Studies and design for rehabilitation, maintenance and repair of structures.

Withdrawn
 Inspection of pipes and small places by using Crawler camera.
 Conduct studies, design and supervision on the installation of retaining systems for
building and roads.
 Studies, management and supervision of major excavations.
 Consultation on the design of dams, water structures and special foundations.
 Consultation on drainage and dewatering systems.
 Load testing of structures (Bridges, Slabs etc.)
 Pavement evaluation for highways and airports.

2.8 Pavement Studies & Evaluation

The following are the equipments and instruments which are relevant to pavement assessment
and rehabilitation studies:

Laser Profiler with Video Logging System

Determine the road roughness, longitudinal profile and macro-texture data, whist
providing fully linked video images.

The laser Profiler is capable of collecting

longitudinal profile, roughness, shape-files
and macro-texture, whilst providing fully
linked video images. Roughness is reported in
International Roughness Index (IRI), Ride
Number (RN) and NAASRA units. The
macro-texture is reported in Mean Profile
Depth (MPD) and Sensor-Measured Texture

Withdrawn
Depth (SMTD) units, while Road safety can be
assessed through the digital imagery.

Non-Destructive Structural Evaluation of Highway & Airport Pavements Using Heavy Fall-
ing Weight Deflectometer (HWD)

A heavy weight deflectometer, HWD, is a testing device used by civil engineers to

evaluate the physical properties of pavement. This could include (but is not limited to)
highways, local roads, airport runways and railway tracks. The machine is usually contained
within a trailer that can be either towed to a location by another vehicle or, when used on
railway tracks, placed on a hand trolley and pushed to the location.

Surface Irregularities Test by Travelling Beam

Three meter long travelling beam device is used to check any irregularities in both
concrete and bituminous road surface. A sensing unit comprising a wheel connected to an
indicator provides a magnification of 4: 1. Deviation of the surface from a straight line is shown
on a incremental graduated scale.

- Surface irregularities tested by straight edge 3m & 4m.

- Friction properties of asphalt road using skid resistance pendulum test.

Visual Inspection Using (PCI) Pavement Condition Index technique

Determine the Pavement Condition Index (PCI) of the roads:

In order to obtain a useful condition assessment of the pavements, unbiased and

repeatable survey procedures must be used. To provide for maximum usefulness, the survey

procedures must be easily understood and relatively simple to perform in the field. ACES had
extensive experience in “condition-assessment” survey procedures that are applicable to a wide
variety of user's needs.

Determine the pavements structural characteristics through destructive testing program

(test pit and cores) for the pavement layers:

Determine, by use of laboratory and field testing, the physical and mechanical properties of the
materials of each pavement layer.

Determine, by use of test pits and cores, the existing thickness of each pavement layer.

that digitally captures the shape of physical objects using a line of
laser light. 3D laser scanners create “point clouds” of data from
the surface of an object. In other words, 3D laser scanning is a way
to capture a physical object’s exact size and shape into the com-
puter world as a digital 3-dimensional representation.
