How to calm
Interview Anxiety
02

1) Be careful what you eat or drink prior to

an interview:
Eat a good breakfast before your interview so you have
the energy you need.
Being hungry can add to your worry and stress.
Avoid caffeine before the interview.
Eat something light before your interview as a heavy
meal can make you tired

2) Don’t “force” yourself to calm down:

Forcing yourself to calm down will just increase your
stress.
As often as you can, focus on your breathing.
Before you speak, pause for a moment and take a breath.

3) Write down your spinning thoughts:

Make a list of everything that’s popping into your head.
Writing can be one of the most therapeutic and helpful
tasks you can do to reduce your anxiety.

4) Plan your day around the interview:

Your day will be more productive if you adhere to your
schedule and stick to any plans you may have.
Arrange for your job interview to take place in the
morning if possible, so you are not stressed and waiting
for it all day.
Make a plan to go somewhere fun or exciting after the
interview so you will have something pleasant to look
forward to.

5) Breathe:
Try breathing in for a count of four, hold for two, and
breathe out for a count of four.
Do this for a minute or two.
Try taking a few minutes to sit and breathe calmly in
your car after you park at the interview site.
You can usually practice breathing anywhere, no one
will likely notice it.

6) Take a walk:
Outdoors is good for your mental health.
Exercise releases positive neurochemicals.
Try to go for a 15-minute walk before your job interview,
or take five minutes to walk around before entering the
building to help clear your head.

7) Remember you are having a

conversation:
Remind yourself that a job interview is a conversation,
not an interrogation.
They are trying to figure out if you would be the best fit
for the role, but this is also your chance to determine if
the position and the company would be a good fit for
you.
Having questions at the ready and being curious can
help to create a more equal power dynamic and lessen
feelings of intimidation.
