Introduction: In a terrible teleportation accident, I have been spliced with my Lobster (Homarus Americanus) dinner. It crawled out of the pot and into my DNA in a flash of light. Of course, this is all make believe, I wouldnt go well with a slice of lemon and hot Garlic butter (just to deter would be cannibals). My task is to produce a finished Photoshop image of myself and my creature spliced in a believable yet monstrous way.

Getting Started:

Fig. 1 Original Sketches

Fig. 2 Influence Map

I started with some sketches to see what my preconceptions of a Lobster look like. This was interesting to see what I did/did not know. I also considered some of the influences I had. This map was posted quite late in the game, but the images had been present in my mind and on my computer for some time.

Understanding Anatomy:

Fig. 3 Homarus Americanus Anatomy 001

Fig.4 Homarus Americanus Anatomy 002

These two images provided me with enough information to move onto some Silhouettes, using Photoshop Phils advice. The anatomy is very important to the way my creature moves more than anything, I need to integrate it into what I know.

Exploring Possibilities: I started to make a couple dozen silhouettes to help flesh out a possible design and a dozen more of combined silhouettes. These really helped me think about the form and purpose of my Hybrid self.

Fleshing Out A Design: It was important for me to start fleshing out a design so I had some sort of path to follow in terms of design, so I started with a couple designs Id got from the silhouettes I made.

The design on the left is one that I worked into originally, but I was later convinced by Phil, Phil and Ruben to make something less conventional. This led me to the bottom 4 designs, something a little less typical and something a bit more striking.

Essay Introduction: After being shown the initial presentations, I found myself asking a question. Why is it that there are so many similarities and differences about Metamorphosis/Anthropomorphism in the way that they idolise or disparage certain animals. This is what I have decided to write my essay about.

Introduction There are many examples of Human/Animal hybrids apparent in both recent and ancient history. This essay is an exploration into the cultural differences and similarities in the types of animals that different parts of the world idolise and disparage. Metamorphosis and Anthropomorphism is seen as a gift in some cultures and the worst possible curse for others, what needs to be thought about is; why? Why is it that there would be any difference? Why is it that there would be any similarity? It is these questions and many more that beg the question why metamorphosis would ever be considered a possibility. Anthropomorphism appears to be just one of many tools we use to perceive our world in a way that we can understand, taking what we know and applying it to that which we do not.

Summary of Essay: Exploration into Cultural differences/correlations on metamorphosis Why such culture exists and is so widespread Animals that are generally held in high regard
