SE WASHERS EE, ASME B18.22.1 1965 PLAIN WASHERS (R 1998) IFI NOTES: 1. ASME 818.22.1 is a standard developed through the procedures of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. B18.22.1 is under the jurisdiction of ASME Standards Committee B18, and is the di- rect responsibility of its Subcommittee 22. 2. The latest edition of B18.22.1 was published in 1965 and at that time was designated ANSI B27.2. In 1975 the standard was reaf- firmed and reissued with its new designation B18.22.1. In 1998 the standard was again reaffirmed without any change in technical content of the 1965 edition. 3. IF endorses the recommendation of B18.22.1 that when selecting Type A washers, priority consideration be given to the preferred washer sizes detailed in Table 1A. 4. ASME B18.22.1-1965 (R 1998) is reprinted with the permission of its publisher, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Three Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016-5990, U.S.A. 1. INTRODUCTORY NOTES torquing. Its intended that these series desig- nations should be discontinued and that the 1.4 Scope washers should be identified by their nominal dimensions. Washer selection should be made 1.1.1 This standard covers two types of gen- _preferably from the preferred sizes shown in eral purpose plain washers designated as Type Aand Type B. 1.1.2 The inclusion of dimensional data in this standard is not intended to imply that all of the products described herein are production items. Consumers are requested to consult with manu- facturers concerning lists of stock production sizes. 1.2. Types of Washers 1.2.1. Type A. The Type A plain washers were originally developed in a light, medium, heavy, and extra heavy series with proportions that were related to the dimensions of bolt heads and nuts Principally to minimize embedding and to aid Table 1A. In the event the desired Type A washer is not listed in Table 1A, reference may be made to Table 1B. 1.2.2 Type B. The Type B plain washers are available in a narrow, regular and wide series with proportions designed to fulfil the custom- ary purpose of distributing load over larger ar- eas of lower strength materials. Suitable washer selection can be made by referring in Table 2 to the nominal screw or bolt size and selecting the appropriate width series for the application. 1.3. Dimensions All dimensions in this standard are given in inches, unless otherwise stated. (© 2003 industrial Fasteners Insitute t—1) a ASME B18.22.1 WASHERS PLAIN WASHERS 1965 SESE ely 1.4 Materials: 1.4.1 Plain washers shall be made of ferrous or nonferrous metal, plastic or other material as specified. The tolerances indicated in the tables are intended for metal washers only. (FI Note: ASTM F844, page L-20, covers chemical and mechanical properties of un- hardened steel washers.) 1.4.2 If hardened washers are required, they are available as a stamped product without break or gap and as a flat coiled product with gap narrow enough to prevent tangling. Suitable mechanical properties for hardened stamped plain washers are covered by ASTM F436, page L+24. Applicable properties for plain washers coiled from wire shall be AISI 1060 steel, or equivalent, heat treated to a hardness of Rock- well C45 to 53. 1.5 Quality Washers shall be free from burrs, loose scale, sharp edges and all other defects that might affect their serviceability. 1.6 Terminology For definitions of terms relating to wash- ers or features thereof used in this standard, refer to ASME B18.12, page N-1 L—2 © 2003 Industrial Fasteners Institute } ASME B18.22.1 Ea 1965 PLAIN WASHERS WASHERS ) EERE Table 1A Dimensions of Preferred Sizes of Type A Plain Washers ni 7 c Nominal Inside Diameter ‘Outside Diameter Thickness om = Ee = a ae = ate bales a [i | 28° | ae me =—= sara] noob aoor ares eas | ome | S| Does | ame = Gene | S008 | cee | Bes | Gar | Sams | Size | ass | gave as amt) nate | 9605 | 0282 | ane | Gos | sce | ces | cs rare com __| SI | £008 | SORE | S882 | Sem | ae | acer] cane | acs sti Pores] ome] ooos Pose ooe] ome) cas] one ome ee ee Ee ee See aio Stee | 0386) O8%8 | Sots | Qaee | Sere | tos | Gove | cas | Goss G8 | S358] Rete | Gare | Sanz | cts | sos | boss] cam | oust Ga case NT oer] amie] me | oame [Ooms sobs | OE | OB | OBST We cam | oate| ame | gues | ost | Sone | coor | sos | cam | ener aid S22 W | O3t2) B6H8 | Oat | ores | Bt | er | boss | come | east ° Sib O22 [Se] Gee | come | cate | Sets | San | ces | see | oes ae care Haas] ante] coer cor] ows | oan [eoes utes Taist A BS SHS W | Gaze] So%s | Sots | Soo | soso | san | Goes | eos | toes AB ARS | Sea] oie | Sar | Gaze | Goes | Goor | cose | ae | oost TAS S485 | S469] Sots | Goes | 23z5 | cm | tor | cose | st | cose GE aspen] oar] ome | ome | aoez | cos Er Goes | Ose T ore We Gm | Seer] Gare | Sere | 19% | 3s | aor | cnes| caus | anos ol 2600 W | ett) Oats | oar | 2z5 | cae | gor | coss| az | oore Bis ogee 8 | geet] Sars | SSE | 1255 | cae | coor | ens | esas | ones Se tess | osse] amo] acer [toa] com | coir [ tos] erat [wore Se nee | amma] am | coer | 2 | oom | cow | dase] ace | aie reap a loses | fetes noe ce tose fs fcc | ase ae ‘5 ee great al tra sao [elem | a ae | sel nis a aa omen] ome] coms] oor] rea] om f ome orae] oo] aos Me Bas Wy | O58 | oaee | cour | sass | ass | coor | eaes| sass | ass f ORS | sae) eee | oour | Zee | ase | Gant | Gos | sso | ato 7 {ASM | te] Sees | Sm | 2008 | | can | Gos | Se | ise Ea Ed Ed BSS TEEN | ae] ees] cae | aS] ee | S| iss] a8 | ise LEW | 188) Oost | oar | ae | ease | coer | aes | cues | crae BON | S| Sass | Sam | ae ee eae | Sam | eves | cae THe NT ts) cost om arse oso] coor] ores] ores | eros 1a TSE | ES] Geee] oor | 3200 | Seas | cove | ocso| os | sass Hae BSW | 18) BOs | Oose | 3ame | cos | coor | sss | eaae | Gos EAS 133M | HE] S852 | Satz | 320s | Se | Gano | to | ees | ces tates tT eae] onto aves oe eo baat | oT Oree Tee TSE | HR] SRS] oor | Same | 00s5 | dora | saan] oa | oaas tae tm | as) oa gar | tam | ccas | cave | case] ais | aces oS | 2m oat | ee | £255 | hoes | cota | a | oats | esas Sasa ars] ence] cow] sar one | cote | ean oa [oes Fig com | SS] Soe | cote | oe | oe | Seve | ecse| cams | cas Be eee a eee nes eel oces loses lasso ae | eae az Stay tae lone coel| 22 [ccna ote oe Teta a NOTES: (1) Preferred sizes are for the most part from series proviously designated "Standard Plate" and "SAE.” Where common sizes existed in the two series, the SAE size is designated "N" (narrow) and the ‘Standard Plate “W" (wide), These sizes as well as all other sizes of Type A Plain Washers are to be ‘ordered by ID, OD and thickness dimensions, (2) Additional selscted sizes of Type A Plain Washers are shown in Table 18.
