1. What is HIV/AIDS and what are its symptoms and causes?

HIV is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system and AIDS is something you can end up with
if HIV is not treated. You can be infected with HIV if you come into contact with infected blood or fluids.
It’s mostly known to be a sexually transmitted virus. Symptoms include but are not limited to fever,
fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, diarrhea, weight loss, oral yeast infection, shingles, and pneumonia.

2. State some social issues of HIV/AIDS and what is the current situation in the Philippines?

People who get diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may hide their diagnosis for fear of being shunned or
ostracized. A solution to this problem is to educate people about sexually transmitted diseases.
However, the topic of sex is a taboo in many cultures, religions, and places. The Philippines is facing the
fastest growing HIV epidemic in the western Pacific. Interventions done against this problem included
the promotion of sexual health and education and administering medicine that could help prevent
transmission. The hurdles these interventions face include the existing stigma of HIV/AIDS and the
limited availability and accessibility of the medicine around the country.

3. How do you prevent HIV AIDS? Explain.

Since HIV/AIDS is transmitted be getting into contact with infected fluids like blood and sexual
fluids, avoiding them as much as possible is a great prevention method. Cases where you might get into
contact with these fluids include sharing needles or razors and engaging in sex.

4. How can you educate your tutee about HIV AIDS in a most effective way? Cite some effective teaching
strategies.

An effective way to educate our tutees about HIV/AIDS is to first assess what they know about
the topic. Once we know what level they’re at, we can start by sharing with them some common facts or
disproving common misconceptions. We could also have them ask us questions about it to avoid giving
them information that’s not appropriate for their age.
