HEPATITIS B
is a life-threatening liver infection
caused by the hepatitis B virus
(HBV). It represents a major health
problem on a global scale. It can
become chronic and carries a high
risk of death from cirrhosis and
liver cancer.
This disease is transmitted by
exposure to infected body fluids.
TESTS TO DETECT
HEPATITIS B

HBsAg (hepatitis B surface antigen)

HBsAb or anti-HBs (hepatitis B surface antibody)
HBcAb or anti-HBc (hepatitis B core antibody)
SYMPTOMS
Fever
Diarrhea
Nausea
Yellowing of the skin and eyes
Loss of appetite
PATIENT DOCTOR DIALOGUE
PATIENT:
Doctor, good morning, I tested positive for
hepatitis B. What does this mean? How
Doctor: serious is it?
Good morning, miss. The first thing we should
do is analyze the results of your blood test.
Tell me, what did your hepatitis B antibody
result mean? PATIENT:
I think it said "undetermined."
Doctor:
"Indeterminate" can mean several things. It could be that the level of
antibodies against hepatitis B is not high or low, but rather
somewhere in between, which can indicate that your infection may be
recent or that you are in an early stage of infection.

RESULTS
To know the result of a hepatitis B
test, it is necessary to request the
laboratory report from your doctor
or the laboratory where the test
was performed. The report should
include the hepatitis B antigen level
(an indicator of an active or recent
infection) and hepatitis B antibody
levels (which indicate the body's
response to the infection).
Report from a real patient:
- Hepatitis B antigen: undetermined (injectable by
recombinant strain).
- Total antibody against hepatitis B: positive.
- IgM antibody against hepatitis B: negative.
- Specific antibody against hepatitis B: positive
It means that something was found, but you cannot
say with certainty whether or not it is an infection. The
result indicates that a small level of hepatitis B antigen
was detected. This may be remnants of a past
infection or it may be a new, recent infection.
