LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS CARRYING 5 MARKS 5 x 3 = 15
35. Explain the process of nutrition in amoeba.
36. A farmer was unhappy because of his low crop yield. He discussed the problem with an agricultural
scientist and realized that the soil of his field was either too acidic or too basic. What remedy would
you suggest the farmer to neutralize the soil?
37. Give an example of a chemical reaction for each of the following situations:
(a) A change in color is observed.
(b) A gas is evolved.
(c) Sound is produced.
38. CASE STUDY 1 5
Oxygen which is essential for the survival of all organisms is produced during photosynthesis. In
the absence of photosynthesis, life would be impossible on the earth. During photosynthesis,
chlorophyll containing cells of leaves, in the presence of sunlight, use carbon dioxide and water
to synthesise carbohydrates.
The process can be represented in an equation: During the process oxygen is released. The
presence of starch in leaves indicates the occurrence of photosynthesis. Starch is also a
carbohydrate
Carbon dioxide+ water —— Sunlight——-> Carbohydrate+ oxygen

Q. 1) Which of the following organism produces oxygen?

(a) Humans
(b) Plants
(c) Bacteria
(d) Fungi
Q. 2) Photosynthesis occurs in the presence of light?
(a) True
(b) False
(c) Both (a)&(b)
(d) None of the above

Q, 3) ------------------------------component is essential for the survival of all the living organisms.

(a) Oxygen
(b) Carbon dioxide
(c) Nitrogen
(d) Hydrogen

Q. 4) Write the equation of photosynthesis?

Q. 5) What is the indication of the occurrence of photosynthesis in a plant?

39. CASE STUDY 2 5
Our muscle cells can also respire an aerobically, but only for a short time, when there is a
temporary deficiency of oxygen. During heavy exercise, fast running, cycling, walking form any
hours or heavy weight lifting, the demand for energy is high. But the supply of oxygen to produce
the energy is limited. Then anaerobic respiration takes places in the muscle cells to fulfil.
The demand of energy:
Glucose…… (in muscle) in the absence of oxygen—____Lactic acid + energy
The cramps occur when muscle cells respire anaerobically. The partial breakdown of glucose
produces lactic acid. The accumulation of lactic acid causes muscle cramps. We get relief from
cramps after a hot water bath or a massage. Hot water bath or massage improves circulation of
blood. As a result, the supply of oxygen to the muscle cells increases. The increase in the supply
of oxygen results in the complete breakdown of lactic acid into carbon dioxide and water.
Q. 1) Can muscle cells respire anaerobically?
(a) True
(b) False
(c) None

Q. 2) Which substance causes muscle cramps during strenuous workout or any other hardcore
training?
(a) Lactose acid
(b) Glucose
(c) Lactic acid
(d) None
Q. 3) We get relief form cramps
After…………………………………
And…………………………………..
(a) Hot water bath and massage.
(b) Cold water bath.
(c) Massage.
(d) All of the above.

Q. 4) When is the demand of energy is high in human body?

Q. 5) How is lactic acid broken down?
