1. Captain Alvarado was a well-respected sea captain in the city of Lima.

2. Before Esteban and Captain Alvarado embark on their voyage, Esteban attempts to hang

himself. Alvarado is quick to dissuade and saves Esteban from his attempted suicide.

3. The character whom the Abbess saves from a long period of despair is Camila Perichole.

4. The Marquesa shows her daughter undying and obsessive love and affection; this leads

Dona Clara to be resentful toward her mother and distance herself.

5. Most people regard the appearance of Don Jamie as a beautiful and wealthy boy who

inherited his mother's forehead and eyes.

6. The Abbess is one of the most charitable characters in the book as she cares for the sick,

raises children in need of a home, and runs a girls' school based on Christian values.

7. People regard Don Jamie when he is not suffering from his convulsions as grave and very

silent.

8. Uncle Pio plans to take Don Jamie into his care for a year to teach him Latin, fencing,

music, and everything a gentleman should know.

9. Camila decides to join the Abbess, devoting her life to the sick, young, and other

charitable social works.

10. Before Uncle Pio adopted Camila, she used to sing ballads in cafés.

11. Once Marquesa learns of her daughter's pregnancy, she becomes obsessed with Dona

Clara's and the baby's health. She forbids her maids to enter the home with their hair tied

12. The Viceroy encourages Camila to apologize to the Marquesa as her son-in-law was an

increasingly high-ranking figure in Spain and could very well supplant the Viceroy.

13. The Abbess chose little Pepita to become her successor for her kind heart and strong

leadership skills.

14. Manuel gave up his love for the actress Camila as it began to come between the twin's

love and trust for each other.

15. After Manuel's tragic death, Esteban tells the Abbess that he was Manuel and Esteban

had been the one who passed.

17. Camila shuns Uncle Pio after she quits the theater because of the way she was treated by

him in the past and she feels her role in society is too high to be seen with him.

18. After Camila isolates herself from society, Uncle Pio makes multiple attempts to show

his compassion for her. He ventures to her home even when she does not wish to see him

and donates money so she can survive. Shortly before the accident, he even offers to take

Don Jamie into his care to teach him how to become a gentleman.

19. After the passing of her great friend and beloved son, she realizes she spent her time

selfishly and wishes she could have been more compassionate and loving towards them.

20. We see a change in Dona Clara shortly before her visit to the Abbess when she becomes

pregnant and when she reads her mother’s final and beautiful letter.

21. In this passage, The Abbess searches for her successor and finds little Pepita directing the

other children at the trough.


22. Here Camila refers to her child, Don Jamie, and tells Uncle Pio he may not take her child

into his care.

23. The Marquesa whispers these words to sleeping Pepita. She decides to start her life again

after reading Pepita’s letter that tells she loves and cares deeply about Marquesa.

24. Esteban speaks this passage as he feels he is in Manuel's way and encourages him to

leave him behind to chase after the girl he loves.
