Personal Awareness Tool

Effective leaders and managers of diversity are aware of their own biases, beliefs, and attitudes. They are
willing to admit that they sometimes feel uncomfortable or tense with people who are different from them.

Review of Dimensions of Diversity

Internal External Organizational
Age Geographic location Management status
Race Recreational habits Functional level
Gender Appearance Work content/field
Ethnicity Parental status Seniority
Physical ability Personal habits Division/department
Sexual orientation Marital status Work location
Political preference
Income
Religion
Educational background
Work experience
Union affiliation

Take a few minutes and think about how you are different in each of these dimensions (internal, external,
and organizational) and any biases and beliefs you hold about these differences.

Use the space provided to make notes. Try to be as honest with yourself as possible. You do not need to
share this with anyone unless you choose to do so.

After you have reflected and made some notes, consider ways you could change any of your biases or
beliefs that create barriers for managing diversity. Consider making an effort to spend time with people
who are different from you. Listen to them with empathy. Keep an open mind. Look for the skills and
qualities they bring to their work.

Biases and Beliefs about Differences

Next, take a few minutes to reflect on how you are similar in each of these dimensions and what makes
you feel comfortable or uncomfortable. Do you “fit” with certain types of people more than others? Note
these in the space below, along with any beliefs or behaviors you would like to change. Try to spend time
with people who are different from as well as similar to you. Observe how you feel in both situations. Be
conscious of how your awareness of differences and similarities is changing how you work with others.
