Analog signal vs Digital signal
• Major classification of data: analog vs. digital
Ø Analog signals
ü speech
ü music
ü temperature readings, barometric pressure, wind speed
ü images stored on film
Ø Analog signals can be represented (approx) using bits
ü audio: 8, 16, 24 bits per sample
ü digitized images (can be compressed using JPEG)
ü digitized video (can be compressed to MPEG)
qEqualization
qSecurity
• Advantages:
Digital signals are much easier to be regenerated
Digital circuits are less subject to distortion and
interference
Digital circuits are more reliable and can be
produced at a lower cost than analog circuits
It is more flexible to implement digital hardware
than analog hardware
• Disadvantages:
Heavy signal processing
Synchronization is crucial
Larger transmission bandwidth
Non-graceful degradation
• Digital technology
Low cost LSI/VLSI technology
• Data integrity
Longer distances over lower quality lines
• Capacity utilization
High bandwidth links economical
High degree of multiplexing easier with digital techniques
• Security & Privacy
Encryption
• Integration
Can treat analog and digital data similarly
