have demanded a detailed probe
into the death of 9 tigers in the
forest ranges of the Nilgiris dis-

mother of a month-old baby was
allegedly gang-raped and killed
at her home in Assam's Morigaon
district, officials said on Wednes-

Assam: Burmese betel
nuts worth Rs 50 lakh
seized, one held
Guwahati, Sep 20 (IANS) :
Assam Police seized illegally
smuggled Burmese betel nuts in
Hailakandi district on Wednes-
day, officials said. A senior po-
lice officer said that at least 180
sacks of Burmese betel nuts
were seized in an operation car-
ried out against the illegal smug-
gling. According to the police,
the market value of seized betel
nuts must be around Rs 50
lakhs.
The police have arrested the
driver of the vehicle which was
carrying the consignment of
Burmese betel nuts. The arrested
person has been identified as
Habibur Laskar. The police have
been interrogating him. Further
investigation in the matter is
underway. The Barak valley re-
gion of Assam is used a transit
route for the smuggling of Bur-
mese betel nuts which were
transported from Indo-Myanmar
border through Mizoram and
Manipur.
UP to amend property tax
rules with an eye on tourism

grams of smuggled gold at the
Indo-Bangladesh borders at

arrested in this connection has
been identified as Indrajit Patra,
a resident of Kulia village also

He was carrying the smuggled
gold in the form of biscuits and
bars within the air-filter of the
motorcycle that he was
driving.The estimated market
price of smuggled gold seized is
to the tune of around Rs 14 crore.
The seized consignment includes
