1.2Purpose of study op
The overall purpose of this study was to investigate the stratigraphy at the site
and to develop geotechnical recommendations for foundation design and
C
construction.
1) Drilled One (1) borehole up to 25.00 m depth in order to determine site
stratigraphy and collected soil and groundwater samples for laboratory testing.
ft
4) Collected undisturbed soil samples from the bore holes at regular intervals of
3.0m or change of strata as per IS Code.
5) Thereafter, Collected and transported selected samples of soil & rock to the
testing laboratory and conducted relevant tests to determine engineering
properties of different subsoil strata; and
6) Analysed all field and laboratory data in order to develop engineering
recommendations for foundation design and construction.

2.1Drilling
The boreholes were progressed using a mechanized shell to the specified depth.
y
The borehole diameter was 150 mm. Where caving of the borehole occurred, 150 mm
diameter casing was used to keep the borehole stable. The work was in general
accordance with IS: 1892-1979.
op
Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) was conducted in the boreholes at 1.5 m
depth intervals. The test was performed by connecting a split spoon sampler to rods
C
and driving it by 45 cm using a 63.5 kg hammer falling freely from a height of 75 cm.
The tests were conducted in accordance with IS: 2131-1981.
Standard split spoon sampler was used for conducting Standard Penetration
ft
Test and were conducted in boreholes to obtain SPT ‘N’ values. It is ensured that the
ra
energy of the falling weight is not reduced by friction between the drive weight and the
guides or between ropes. The number of blows required to drive each 15cm penetration
is recorded. The first 15cm of drive considered as seating drive. The total blows
D
required for the second and third 15cm penetration is termed as a penetration
resistance - N value.
Disturbed samples were collected from the split spoon after conducting SPT.
Undisturbed samples were collected by attaching 75 mm diameter thin walled ‘Shelby’
tubes and driving the sampler by light hammering using a 63.5 kg hammer in
accordance with IS: 2132-1986. The tubes were sealed with wax at both ends. All
samples were transported to our NABL accredited laboratory at Surat for further
examination and testing.
Groundwater level was measured in the boreholes 24 hours after drilling and
sampling was completed. The groundwater table was recorded up to the investigated
depth in borehole during subsoil exploration work carried out in the month of July
2023.

3. LABORATORY TEST
Laboratory tests were conducted on selected soil, to determine their physical
and engineering properties. The testing procedures were in accordance with current
applicable IS specifications.
The following tests were conducted on selected soil samples recovered from the
boreholes:

4.1Regional Geology
ft
The soils derived their characteristics from the basaltic rocks as parts of the
district. The basaltic lava flows are covered by black clayey to loamy soil. It is in general
ra
ranges in thickness up to one meter. The colour of the soil turns brown due to high
iron content at places. The area is affected by tide as well as leaching of salts from up
land forming saline alkali soils. Major geological formations exposed in the district are
D
Quaternary alluvium, Tertiary limestone and sandstones and deccan trap basalt.

6. CONCLUSION
Given results obtained during the field and laboratory investigations and the
analysis carried out after that, the following general recommendations are being made
for the foundation design of the proposed Construction of new, Intake well North
Songadh regional water supply scheme, at Borisaval.
1. Subsurface investigation work carried out by M/s. R. R. Infra–Pvt. Ltd. during
July-2023 and soil/rock samples were submitted to laboratory for further process.
2. The evaluation of pile load capacity is as per IS 2911 & IRC 78.
3. Pile capacity shall be confirmed at site by conducting pile load test as per is-2911.
4. Proper group efficiency factored shall be considered based on No. of pile in a group
if No. of piles is provided.
5. The Expert’s opinion is advisable for selection of the pile type & proper pile Design.
6. Subsurface conditions encountered during construction may vary somewhat from
y
the conditions encountered during the site investigation. In case significant
op
variations are encountered during construction, we request to be notified so that
our engineers may review the recommendations in this report in light of these
variations.
